"Accounting? Really? Not what I would have guessed." I've heard that a fair few times, and trust me, I had no idea either! As someone who thrives on group interactions (yes, the pandemic has been rough) accounting isn't the profession I ever saw myself going into. I'm a people-person, I actually enjoy attending networking events, and communication skills always end up at the top of those skills assessments tests. As it turns out, being able to take all of that "numbers stuff" and turn it into something that is meaningful and understandable for the rest of the business world is probably one of the most useful and important skills a CPA can have.Adding value is important to me - my favourite part of the work I do right now is the analysis. Taking that "numbers stuff", a variance analysis for example, and explaining why that variance is there, and how it impacts, or how it should be impacting, other areas, is a way of adding value for my organization, my colleagues, and the growers we work with. It's about looking at the big picture and considering how everything has been integrated and is working together. Whether it's adding value by improving experiences, improving a process, or adding value by mentoring a junior colleague, adding value makes a positive impact for the people I work with and my organization and it's something I continually strive to do.
