How do we know when we're healed, "fixed", back to ourselves? There's a lightening up, a kinder voice in our heads, a bursting generosity and restored sense of purpose. And how does one get there with an integrative therapist? It begins with talk therapy: you in the here and now. It moves to go-to's like Breathwork and Tapping. Honoring the Child part who survived (whether little t or Big T trauma). Listing the constricting beliefs of your Inner Critic. Inviting you to play with new self-talk, role-playing, power poses or seeking "signs." Helping you map past, present, or looming conflicts to re-write your future. The best healing comes with feeling safe enough with me to break your own rules and truly come to know and love yourself. Above all, my respect for your emotional truth is what makes the relationship work. With grace, I can help you see how a highly sensitive nature, long held emotional states and unhelpful communication styles could be maintaining unhappiness. Also ...... as the creative arts practitioner who developed Dreamscaping, I also love to help my clients struggling with loss, to build the memory they need in their own imagination. Say, for example, we discover an unmet need. Maybe there is a beloved person, place or thing you can never return to. I would resource your felt sense memory for all the memories that lifted you up in the past with regards to this person, place or thing. Assembling these into a prescriptive memory, I'd "run the movie" to make sure you continue to be lifted up by this new (hybrid) memory. The final step would be to make the prescriptive memory tangible— as a photo collage, seamless digital photo collage, 3-D shrine or multimodal piece of art. Populations benefiting from dreamscaping range from those struggling with grief/loss to people with eating disorders. For case presentations of Dreamscaping, see my book, “Prescriptive Memories in Grief and Loss: The Art of Dreamscaping” (Routledge, 2019) co-authored with Barbara E. Thompson, , LCSW, OTR/L, CAGS. Contributors include: Lauren J. Breen, PhD, FT | Noah Hass-Cohen, PsyD, ATR- BC, LMFT | John R. Memory Artist/ Developer Of Dreamscaping And Prescriptive Memory-MakingNancy Gershman Jan 2004 - PresentNew York, NyAs the developer of Dreamscaping, I train clinicians to help clients create the memory they need in their own imagination. It's a playful hunt for novelty pre-loss, and co-creation of a mind-movie/tangible picture that launches memory reconsolidation, “deleting” the sights/sounds haunting the client.

“Prescriptive Memories In Grief And Loss: The Art Of Dreamscaping"Routledge Taylor & Francis Group Jan 2016 - Jul 2019Greater New York City Area"Prescriptive Memories in Grief and Loss: The Art of Dreamscaping" is designed for use by art therapists, social workers, psychologists, pastoral care counselors, bereavement counselors and others interested in innovative approaches for working with people at the end of life and in the aftermath of significant loss. Rooted in recent discoveries about how the emotional brain encodes new memories, this book describes how to create a resource-rich “prescriptive memory.” With contributions from internationally recognized authors, the theory behind dreamscaping and its application with various populations and settings are examined. In addition, the nexus between dreamscaping and empirical research is explored. Sixteen color dreamscape images, co-created by clients and therapists, illustrate case material presented in the chapters. Protocols for use with individuals and groups are included to assist clinicians in implementing this novel, strengths-based approach that cultivates hope, and promotes restoration and growth.Co-Author: Barbara E. Collaborator With Emdr-Trained Art Psychotherapist, Lauren Lazar SternThe Healing Memory Project: Dreamscaping With The Eating-Disordered Feb 2008 - Jun 2013Pittsburgh, PaWhat’s in place after an Eating Disorder client transitions from therapy – be it EMDR, talk or art therapy? What exists to ensure the patient will recall epiphanies and checklists made in treatment when a relapse occurs and disordered thinking returns? This is what’s at the heart of The Healing Memory Project, a collaboration between this digital artist in the prescriptive arts and Pittsburgh-based therapist, Lauren Lazar Stern MA, ATR-BC, LPC.Drawing from narrative therapy, my methodology begins with photos and memory. A “preferred future” is co-created with the client, which I then translate into a transitional object in the form of a prescriptive photomontage. I employ Photoshop (digital photo manipulation software) to create the impeccable reality in each client's “Healing Dreamscape.” By commingling and repurposing fragments of memory, I aim to invoke a private mythology that reframes the patient’s thinking about their past and future with humor and irony; sensory imagery; metaphor and symbolism. Output size ranges from a credit-card sized print to an 8"x10". For clients who have a history of veering off course, The Healing Memory Project is an important safeguard. If one thinks of therapy as the interpretation, reprocessing and desensitization of harsh reality, think of the Healing Dreamscape as a snapshot of a client’s progress and positive mindset, and a vision of dreams to come. A record of where you came from, where you are now and where you are going.
