Through my journey of process and error, I identified a resource that was lacking for students on Chandler-Gilbert Community College’s campus and decided to pursue making myself that specific resource that was lacking. In an effort to prevent others from becoming discouraged by the seemingly overwhelming process and not apply, I developed a plan of action to create workshops to lessen missed opportunities generously offered to students by supportive organizations. With this in mind, I approached campus personnel for the space on campus to hold my workshops. After securing a classroom, I established twice a week scholarship workshops on campus for the fall 2013 semester. To make students aware of this opportunity, I sent out emails to the student body, posted flyers on campus as well as by word of mouth. I reached out to hundreds of students and approximately thirty students attended various sessions. During these workshops I helped the students search and apply for online scholarships. Once the scholarships they were qualified for were identified, I guided the students through each online application process. I discussed with each student their specific attributes and helped identify their key strengths that matched the scholarship requirements. They were then able to build their essays upon those strengths discussed. The face to face discussion was significant in the students recognizing the attributes they possessed. I also shared my experiences, templates, and written tips shared with me by active essay decision board members and encouraged the students to continue researching on their own for opportunities available them. Through this two year process I’ve become aware of my own resourcefulness and strength in overcoming intimidating challenges, as well as my desire to help others by sharing my experiences as motivation and guidance for them to achieve success in securing scholarships.
