I became a Career Coach by accident. This wasn't a path I envisioned 10 years ago. If anything, I had pictured myself as a renowned Health Communications Specialist, writing for the World Health Organization or contributing to BBC's Health Desk.I've worked in various organizations. My earliest paid gig was as a contributing writer for the Institution of Engineers Kenya (IEK) magazine, a role I got through a referral from a lecturer. Shortly after, I landed a job as a Content Editor at a telecommunications company, also a referral from a friend. Then, serendipity happened. In 2019, someone sent me their CV, asking for a review before submitting an application to the Nursing Council of Kenya. I revised it and thought nothing of it. Later, I helped another person prepare for an interview. They asked me to review some pamphlets and skim through their script, ensuring everything aligned. They got the job - and, once again, I moved on without a second thought.Since then, I have:- Revamped 500+ CVs- Reviewed hundreds of CVs- Rewritten 200+ LinkedIn profiles- Helped professionals prepare for interviews- Spoke to 1000+ professionals about their careersThe result:- Empowered professionals to unlock new career opportunities- Supported meaningful progress in career journeys- Boosted confidence in personal branding

It changed my life completely! When I was in primary school, a writer of one of our English books, Kenneth Otieno, visited.I remember the glow in my eyes as I watched him speak. Our school was tucked in the remote parts of Nyansiongo, surrounded by vast, lush green tea plantations. Seeing Kenneth on that stage sparked something inside me. He spoke with a command of words that felt almost magical, from his alliterations to the way he took small, measured steps as he looked at us.From that moment, I made a promise to myself: I would be a writer. It helped that I excelled in both composition and Insha writing. In high school, I had a supportive Swahili teacher who praised my work and even read my stories to other students. He’d often say, “Kemuma, naomba daftari lako la Insha.” Those moments fueled my dream even further. To this day, my high school classmates still remind me of my stories from back then and often ask if I ever pursued anything related to storytelling.Eventually, I went on to study Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Nairobi.I may have forgotten about Kenneth Otieno’s visit, but deep down, the desire to become an author never faded. Years later, on LinkedIn, I saw a call for story submissions from Cadbury Africa. Hesitantly, I submitted a manuscript that had been sitting on my desktop. It was accepted, and I became a published author. That moment took me right back to when Kenneth Otieno walked up to the dais and spoke to a 12-year-old me, sparking a dream I didn’t even know was waiting to unfold.I’m currently working on a collection that, once complete, will be the fulfillment of my Ikigai.

Linkedin Top Voice - Job Search And Careers 2024
    Linkedin Jan 2023 - Present
    Africa
This was a first!LinkedIn Top Voice (Job Search and Careers)As someone who is neither a celebrity nor a social media influencer, this recognition came as a surprise.I came to LinkedIn, like many, to look for a job. That was in 2006 when I first downloaded the app. My daughter had just turned one, and I needed a better job to cover living expenses. I logged out as quickly as I had logged in and ran for the hills. I found it hard to navigate and assumed the platform was meant for people in higher professional circles.Three years ago, I decided to give LinkedIn another try. I didn't know what to post, but as an avid reader, I began by sharing synopses of books I was reading. I experimented with different types of content at first, until I felt a calling to focus on careers and office life. It made sense: I'd originally come to LinkedIn to find a job, so it felt natural to center my content around career development. As I continued to interview and learn about the corporate world, I shared insights, and my niche started to take off.Being a lifelong learner, I used every resource I could, podcasts, videos, courses, and mentors. All along, people were watching. One evening, as I was sipping my hibiscus tea, an email popped up with a congratulatory message:''Dear Nancy, We are thrilled to inform you that you will be featured on the LinkedIn Top Voices Job Search and Careers list for 2023 in Africa, recognizing must-follow thought leaders covering all things careers.''I almost choked on my drink. It was a well-deserved recognition for my efforts on this platform. Since then:- I have hosted guests on my audio events,- Created impactful content for job seekers,- Counseled professionals on career choices,- And collaborated with creators from across Africa to inspire listeners.

''Don't rely only on LinkedIn as a job board,'' a LinkedIn post read. I immediately went to Google and typed ''French Content Jobs.'' Voila! A job ad that had been up past the deadline popped up.I submitted my application, and HR got back to me in less than a week. I got the job! This job pushed me out of my comfort zone.↳ Some days, I was the voice-over artist for key projects.↳ On other days, I led assigned projects from francophone countries.↳ I quickly learned to hop into those long Zoom meetings. What I loved most about my work was the impact I created. And the fact that it was a hybrid role. ↳ Over 300 SMEs benefited from the 50+ learning courses I created on entrepreneurship, life skills, and social media.↳ I eased my colleague's work in the animation department by translating documents and learning materials between English, Kiswahili, and French.During my eight months at Centum Learning, I gained valuable skills that I still use today.Where was my next stop? I was headhunted!
