Entering into my 29th year of public library service has allowed me to work with some outstanding librarians. Janet Murphy, was one of them. She and I were one of the first children's librarians in the country to utilize "hometown" cable TV with our TV show "Stories for You." Going to the studio in West Hartford and taping our shows enabled us to reach a community of children that was unable to make it into the library on a regular basis for story times. Community outreach for us began in the late 1980's with this show, which garnered us awards through the Hometown USA organization. Working in a small library on Cape Cod taught me the very valuable lesson of working together as team. Sturgis Library was a place where you could work the circulation desk, as well as cataloging, story hours, community visits, genealogy and fundraising, all on the same day! My time spent in West Palm Beach led me to dream big. Having a great library director who trusted my creative instincts allowed me to take our children's services department and fly. And fly we did. One of our most memorable days was to have First Lady Laura Bush visit our library and do a story time for our kids. That's hard to top except for the everyday contact I had with kids who were struggling at home, in school and with their peers, sometimes coming into the library hungry and alone. It was so gratifying to know that they found our children's space a safe haven where they could dream, be curious and create. Fairfield Public Library has introduced to me a new set of skills while my concept of dreaming big continues. Having a director who is on "your same wavelength" is priceless. Dipping deeper into the community and watching and listening to their inspirations led me to start the first in New England Seed to Seed library. It's become a huge success and has brought awareness to our community of the value their public library can offer. It's an outstanding job, librarianship.
