Senior Science Director
I provided scientific and regulatory support to food, beverage, supplement and natural product clients. My role was to support the Client in his/her effort to establish the safety and/or efficacy of his/her product and achieve the necessary regulatory approvals. As Senior Science Director, my job included assessing clients' data packages for gaps and designing the analytical approach to fill those scientific gaps. I did scientific literature searches, read and analyzed studies for weight-of-the-evidence assessments, and focused specifically on safety endpoints that were relevant from a toxicological perspective. I regularly wrote proposals for new projects and determined the scope of the work. Day-to-day work included writing critical portions of GRAS dossiers, including the chemistry/substance characterization/manufacturing portions, clinical and nonclinical study sections and summary tables, and editing the document for scientific accuracy and consistency plus basic grammar. I regularly drafted emails to clients containing plain, clear language about scientific concepts and study result implications from a business and/or regulatory perspective. I wrote and published a first author study on an innovative approach to the safety evaluation of natural products for use in foods, using the water extract of Vaccinium macrocarpon (cranberry) leaves as a case study (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22504784/). I developed a novel approach toward evaluating the toxicology and safety of natural products and described this approach in the paper. I communicated frequently on conference calls with clients and liaised between nonscientific staff and regulatory/scientific staff, helping to clarify key scientific points and aid companies in making well-informed decisions.

Published the screening assay plus a follow-up paper in peer-reviewed journals. The TRAIL screening assay has been issued U.S. Patent #9238069, as of 1/19/2016.
