Given the opportunity, I’d write all day, every day. About anything. My biggest strength—and greatest pride—is being able to take the barest scraps of information and quickly develop solid copy. I put on all the hats—developer, user, reseller—so that I can write copy with intelligence and understanding. I become such a true believer in the client’s solutions that I often end up wondering how to find a personal use for them.My favorite CEO told me, “I don’t ever want to be the smartest person in the room; that’s why I’m careful about who I hire.” My goal as a content developer was to never let him down. (I miss you, Spencer.)My professional writing career started with a migraine (not mine, thankfully). The principal at the marketing firm I worked at was blinded by pain, but on deadline. He asked me, the office manager with an eye on wordcraft, to edit his whitepaper. When he could see again, he liked my contributions and transitioned me to an account team. (Thanks, Joe!)I have an enviable set of screwdrivers because I’m obsessed with discovering how things work. It’s why I take deep dives into my subject matter to find the best words to market it. (And also why I have a bunch of semi-assembled small appliances in my garage.)Every manager I’ve ever had told me, “Stop hiding your light under a bush.” That was the boss at my first “real” job at age 16 all the way up to my last real boss a few years ago. (Working on it, Toy.) I’m fine talking about my skills and expertise, but I’d rather chat about when and how they made a difference for someone else.
