GPS is a Six Sigma consulting company that has a large food manufacturer as one of its clients. I contracted with GPS and was placed as a Master Black Belt at a dairy plant. My role was as a business partner with the Plant Manager and Continuous Improvement department. I accelerated growth of Six Sigma and Lean by mentoring Black and Green Belts, managing and advancing their project portfolio, and performing lean/six sigma projects and activities on their line due for Six Sigma certification.

Select Comfort is the creator and maker of the Sleep Number Bed. This is a company that sells direct to the end user, so customer quality success was measured by number and content of calls into the customer care center. In my role as a business partner with R&D department I was responsible for the product meeting quality and/or reliability goals. This focused on warranty replacements. In addition to performing my own projects, I mentored Green Belts on their Six Sigma projects. I also managed the project portfolio and its progress to meeting departmental quality goals. I ensured Six Sigma methodology and rigor were applied to these projects and helped in the weekly and monthly reports that were generated and presented to senior management.

I worked for Seagate Technology for a total of 18 years. Seagate makes disc drives, primarily for the OEM market. In my position as a Master Black Belt for the Recording Head Operations, I functioned as a business partner with departments focused on new product and process development. I was charged to help these departments meet their goals using Lean and Six Sigma Techniques. I performed as a user, mentor, and teacher of these skills and other emerging business practices to improve the productivity of the team.

In my job as a manufacturing engineer, I stepped out of a management role to return to being an individual contributor. This allowed me to attend Black Belt training and for my director to assign me directly to difficult, persistent or unusual problems. Our departments were responsible for pre-production and offshore electronics assembly lines that produced Head Arm assemblies for the disc drive.

In this role I managed a department of 14 engineers and technicians which had the responsibility for supporting local and overseas production of Head Arm Assemblies. This was a new department (process based) formed from existing product based departments. We were able to benchmark across the company and use best practices to develop common processes and metrology to support new product development and transfer to our overseas assembly sites in Thailand.

My first role in manufacturing engineer was performing continuation engineering of existing lines and to develop new processes for new products. In my responsibilities to provide engineering support for volume lines I resolved issues with scrap reduction, yield improvement, cleanliness, piece part quality, and cost reductions. I regularly worked with manufacturing control documentation, such as PCAs (process change authorizations) and DAs (Deviation Authorizations). Developing of new product lines included the development of new assembly and measurement techniques. We also would run the lines in house to collect capability and qualification data before the transfer of processes from US to Thailand facilities.

In my role as a design engineer I worked servo control (vibrations) issues on a new product launch. I also created documentation at a new sub-assembly level so that assembly could be built in Thailand. This included the development of inspection and cleanliness specifications,
