During visits, I develop an automated performance modeling tool that combines the statistical-based kernel identification technique and hierarchical model building framework. The main contributions are:Contribution 1: A statistical-based kernel identification method to distinguish different performance patterns by the hardware counter-assisted profiling, which can minimize the kernel number while having a good representation of the overall performance behaviors.Contribution 2: A novel hierarchical and fine-grained bottom-up performance model framework that combines the advantages of the analytical-based method and empirical-based method to build accurate and interpretable performance models. Model error is around 10% for typical HPC application the Los Alamos sea ice model (CICE) and the well-known NAS Parallel Benchmarks (NPBs).
