Profile bio

About Tom Yuzvinsky

I am an experimental scientist working with multiple research groups that bridge the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. I enjoy helping people to advance their research by applying my knowledge of micro- and nanoscale characterization and fabrication techniques to solve problems across a variety of disciplines. My past research has included work on adapting and integrating carbon nanotubes and other synthetic nanotechnology into biological systems for use as subcellular probes and biosensors. As part of a team in graduate school, I also developed a number of techniques for the precise manipulation and atomic-scale modification of carbon nanotubes, which we used to construct the world's smallest synthetic rotational motor (the "nanotube nanomotor"). I have also studied extracellular electron transfer and conductive nanowire production in dissimilatory metal reducing bacteria. In my work outside the lab, I developed and launched an industrial affiliate membership program encompassing all nanotechnology research at UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. I also created a recharge outreach program at UC Santa Cruz that provides electron microscopy and focused ion beam milling to the campus and community at large.Expertise:Scanning electron microscopy, Transmission electron microscopy, Atomic force microscopy, Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, Electron beam lithography, Clean room fabrication techniques, Electronic transport measurement, High vacuum design and materials, Machine shop and metal working, Molecular cloning, Biological AFM, Confocal fluorescence microscopy, Carbon nanotube expertise, Soft lithography,Opto/microfluidic devices,Technology transfer

Listed skills include Nanotechnology, Physics, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Afm, and 34 others.

I have two distinct roles at UC Santa Cruz:1. I manage the School of Engineering cleanroom. In this role, I purchase, install, maintain, repair, develop protocols for, and supervise users on equipment in the SOE cleanroom, which includes multiple mask aligners, profilometers, microscopes, ovens, wet benches, a reactive ion etcher, a parylene coater, and an electron beam evaporator. I advise faculty and students on fabrication processes and adapt equipment and protocols for a wide variety of research projects.2. I run the dual beam microscopy facility at the W.M. Keck Center for Nanoscale Optofluidics. In this role, I serve the campus and surrounding community by providing sample preparation, scanning electron microscopy and focused ion beam milling to over 100 customers, including faculty, post-docs, graduate students, and local start-ups. I also perform educational demonstrations for undergraduate and K-12 science programs, and train individual users on electron microscopy and electron beam lithography. My work at UCSC has been acknowledged on over 125 publications to date.
