About Naomi Kooker

Curiosity and accuracy drive my reporting, whether I'm writing about a chef, a restaurant or a company. In this day of instant and ubiquitous information, I find the details that give a story its twist. (Did you know the late and great Julia Child was a big proponent of gun control?) Goals: Continue learning how to tell stories from the heart through multimedia and engage in more enterprise reporting. Track down the best pancakes in the U.S.Specialties: Interviewing people from all stations in life; feature story writing; breaking news; public speaking; editing; coaching others in their writing; creative writing; recipe development; cooking and wine tasting (B.U. certification).

Collaborated with filmmaker Lindsay C. LaPointe (Linden Tree Productions) to develop storyboard for documentary short "Making Mill Town," which won Spotlight Documentary Film Awards-Gold Award, and 2nd place in Editing, Utah Dance Film Festival. The film documents an immersive multimedia performance installation that animates the history and culture of mill life in the 19th century through dance performance. The video documentary was shot in and around the vacant mill buildings of Lewiston, ME. The film premiered July 2018 at the Lewiston Public Library. I also have had the pleasure and honor to work with filmmaker Roberto Mighty as an assistant producer on several projects that included a television pilot.

My first article for The Boston Globe followed chef Michael Schlow (Alta Strada and others) into Boston's Chinatown to report on local chefs' love of late-night rounds of "cold tea" and mahogany clams after their days were done -- after midnight. My stories have appeared in The Boston Globe Magazine, Food, Travel, and other sections. I continue to contribute to the Globe through Globe North restaurant reviews.

  • Sonia Rose
    Sous Chef
    Sonia Rose Oct 1988 - Oct 1989
    New York, Ny
Performed sous chef duties in opening what turned out to be a successful and noted French restaurant in the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan. Baked bread in the morning, prepped mis en place all day, and cooked on the line at night; worked front-of-house as a server in a pinch. My "claim to fame" was serving Gael Greene, then the 'make-or-break' restaurant critic for New York Magazine; she was incognito, wearing a trademark hat. Her glowing review helped launch the restaurant. I learned hospitality work is like reporting and writing: You get in it for the passion, not the glory.
