I am Narasimha Mandyam Krishnakumar working as Director, Life Sciences at Strand Life Sciences, Bangalore, India. I have spent the last three decades researching in several disciplines that include Biology, Medicine, Computational Chemistry, Algorithms and Computational Geometry. In the past six years, I have developed mathematical models for pharma companies (Eli Lily and Unilever), the most significant being free radical pathways, osteoporosis and bile pathways. I share the Strand’s US patent for virtual liver model. I have designed and developed a software tool for computing molecular descriptors. This was integrated later into the chem-informatics platform (SARCHITECT) of Strand Life Sciences. I also designed clinical biomarkers for renal disease in collaboration with Biocon, a biotechnology company at Bangalore, India. Another area of research was enjoyable was the design and development of a tool for performance evaluation of hospitals and medical practitioners using claims records (for a medical insurance company at USA). My earliest passion was in Mathematics, in particular Computational Geometry. I began my career as a Medical Practitioner in 1982 after my bachelors in medicine (MBBS). I studied and researched in Mathematics and Computational Geometry on my own while I was practising medicine (for nearly sixteen years), till I got admission for Ph.D program (in 1998) in the department of Computer Science and Automation at the Indian Institute of Science(IISc), Bangalore, India. My thesis was on properties of polyhedra, in particular folding and unfolding of convex polyhedra. After my Doctorate in Computational Geometry in 2002, I joined Strand Life Sciences, a Bioinformatics company that was founded by my advisors at IISc, where I am working to date. I am fortunate to get challenging Industrial projects in the last thirteen years in various disciplines which will be discussed in more detail below.
