Wheat is a predominantly autogamous species and it releases the pollen before the flower opens. Due to the presence of cleistogamous flowers and low anther extrusion and also small sized anthers, which produces less number of pollen grains in wheat, makes hybrid breeding difficult. It is very important to redesign the floral and flowering characteristics of wheat and pollen traits, and these are investigated to enforce sufficient outcrossing.Study Phase : In this study, pollen traits (anther extrusion and pollen fertility) were investigated in a set of 56 modern winter wheat varieties and these varieties are grown in replicated yield trials (alpha lattice design 7/8, includes 2 replications, 8 blocks and 7 entries per block) across 8 different locations in Germany. The objectives of this study are• To identify the desirable genotypes for cross-pollination,• To know the variability in the fertility of pollen grains among the genotypes,• Determine the extent of interaction between the genotype and environment, • Identify the correlations between the pollen traits and grain yield, • Estimate the heritability and variance components of the selected traits,• Identify the promising genotypes for grain yield those are widely stable across the different locations by AMMI analysis and GGE biplots in R studio. Conclusion: Our results suggest that there are significant genotypic variance and GXE interactions. Anther extrusion in percentage ranged from 2.29 to 97.60 and VAEX ranged from 1.04 to 9.0. Pollen fertility in percentage ranged from 93.06 to 99.21. Pollen fertility showed low heritability estimates and remaining traits showed high heritability. Show less
