I always yearned to return to the country of my birth in some capacity and contribute to its development and prosperity. I finally decided to split my time between the Netherlands and Somaliland in 2017 and arrived in Hargeisa. With the city still developing albeit at a rapid pace, it opened my eyes to the numerous opportunities available here. I recognised that whatever positive thing you occupy your time with will in some way, big or small, contribute to the country’s development. It was in this period that I came in contact with the IOM’s Connecting Diaspora for Development (CD4D) program. It is a program that is funded by the Dutch government and aims to allow skilled professionals in the diaspora to return for short assignments with various government institutions, thus strengthening their capacity by way of skills transfer. The CD4D program was exactly what I had been hoping to engage in and it was not too long before I started my first assignment in August 2017, and many more followed through the years. This was a truly enriching experience as I worked with various ministries and organisations in the country. Equally, it allowed me to travel in the Somali regions and major cities in the Horn of Africa. The different assignments helped me to contribute to the development of my country of origin, but at the same time, I became a humble student in the vast and beautiful culture, people and overall energy of Somaliland, and the wider Somali regions.Given my long and good relationship with IOM, I was appointed as one of the Ambassadors for the CD4D program in 2020. Although I have always been passionate about mentoring, skills transfer and knowledge transfer, this role has really allowed me to champion it.
