Assisted in conducting primary research focusing on the interaction between microbial communities and the North American sagebrush steppe ecosystem. In the fall of 2023, I used DNA sequences from the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region of fungal cultures isolated from Basin Big Sagebrush, Artemisia tridentata, to create a phylogenetic tree of evolutionary relationships. This provided novel information useful for the characterization of fungal cultures isolated from sagebrush. In the spring of 2023, I used the Unix/Linux Command line, high performance computing, and the QIIME2 pipeline to process millions of 16S reads from bacterial communities isolated from two data sets: soil collected from the sagebrush steppe and fecal and cecal samples from a sagebrush obligate carnivore, the Greater Sage Grouse. Preliminary results indicated an overlap in phyla represented by each study, with potential for these bacteria to be important in decomposition and nutrient cycling. This may provide further understanding of the role microbial communities play in ecosystem functionality and health.
