About Natalie Avery

A DC native, I am passionate about cities and building the partnerships and relationships needed to cultivate thriving places and communities. I am also the founder of the Javera Group, a small DC consulting firm that specializes in government relations and community economic development. As a consultant, my clients have included the DC BID Council, the DowntownDC BID, The Golden Triangle BID, the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Urban Institute and Community Foundation of the National Capital Region.I spent the early part of my career working in policy, studying the impact of globalization on workers and the environment in the global south. After completing a Master’s degree in International Relations, I turned my attention to my own city and neighborhood. I founded the Youth Action Research Group, a groundbreaking program for high-school students to research, write about and advocate around urban development issues in their neighborhoods. I also co-founded Radio CPR, a community radio station that has broadcast the voices, stories, and music of D.C. for 20 years. I am passionate about music and storytelling. I played guitar and sang in 3 DC bands, including Fire Party, an all-woman punk band that toured Europe and the United States and put two records out on Dischord. I’ve made two documentary films about a local boxing gym and performed in two Story District showcases. My love for DC music, history and culture infuses my work and approach to community development and leadership building.
