About Natalie Brender

My professional path is guided by a deep commitment to sharing ideas in order to advance change, and my interests have led me into a broad engagement with Canadian public policy. I've been a senior policy and communications adviser for two federal cabinet ministers; senior adviser to the president and senior researcher at Canada’s largest think-tank; principal of a public policy writing business; and columnist and blogger on Canadian international and domestic policy. I seek out cutting-edge ideas, debates and developments. Among my strongest assets is the capacity to analyze and synthesize complex issues, and to identify policy priorities taking social and political context into account. I am idealist, broad-minded and curious about diverse perspectives—yet committed to clear thinking and effective action. • An intellectual generalist who sees the big picture and gets context, complexity and change• Wide knowledge of Canadian public policy, including foreign affairs/ international development; citizenship, diversity and immigration; higher education; research and innovation; urban affairs• 20 years in Canadian public policy research and analysis• 15+ years as lecturer, spokesperson and advocate through presentations, writings, strategic messaging and media appearances• 7+ years as principal of Brender Writing, a public policy writing business helping government, non-profits and associations advance research, advocacy and communication• 10+ years in non-profit governance, serving on social service, educational and religious boards • A good colleague who contributes calm mature judgment, exploratory conversation, broad consultation and recognition of others’ working styles
