• Research and compile briefing material, drawing on external advice and expertise, to support the scrutiny of a wide range of subjects in social science policy. Research projects range from ad hoc briefings and providing social science advice on other advisers’ projects to more formal peer-reviewed briefings (‘POSTnotes’) that will require an ability to research areas you may not already be familiar with.• Assist parliamentary select committees, e.g. by providing written or oral briefings on social science topics. This may include designing research projects and the analysis of evidence.• Develop and maintain a network of stakeholders to ensure that you have a good understanding of parliamentary, policy and scientific developments relevant to your area and to ensure that Parliament has access to the best available evidence and expertise. Key stakeholders include select committees, parliamentary libraries, the POST Board, Members, government departments, regulators, Research Councils, academics, learned societies, non-governmental organisations, and industry bodies.• Line manage the Social Science Advisor and to administer fellows and fellowship schemes.• Undertake horizon scanning activities and to develop research proposals for consideration by parliamentary colleagues and the POST Board.• Present at events in Parliament and externally, such as in academic institutions.• Contribute to wider activities in Parliament that strengthen research use and appraisal, such as through the Policy, Research and Analysis Community programme.• Contribute to the achievement of broader objectives of the Research and Information team and to those of Parliament as a whole.

The responsibilities are• to identify and analyse research evidence across diverse subjects in life sciences, medicine and health, drawing on external advice and expertise, and to research, edit and author peer-reviewed briefings (and to provide editorial support on work undertaken by others).o This requires experience in critically appraising research literature and other evidence (with which the adviser may not already be familiar), managing peer review (or equivalent) processes, and publishing high-quality written work. • to maintain and develop a network of stakeholder relationships to ensure POST understands scientific and policy developments in life sciences, health and medicine and to inform horizon scanning and future work topics. Working collaboratively across parliamentary teams to ensure that POST is supporting evidence-informed practices.o This requires experience developing internal and external stakeholder relationships, identifying emerging scientific trends, and using these to inform a forward work programme aligned with parliamentary interests. • to manage PhD parliamentary fellowship schemes, recruit and manage doctoral and senior academics undertaking parliamentary fellowships, and supervise all aspects of Fellows’ work on 3-month or longer placements at POST. o This requires experience in managing relationships with external organisations, running recruitment processes, and supervisory experience, involving developing the skills and expertise of others and editing others’ written work. • communicating effectively orally and in writing with a wide range of people at all levels of understanding, including parliamentarians and external audiences. This includes representing POST at scientific and policy conferences and through outreach activities in collaboration with the Knowledge Exchange Unit.o This requires experience in communicating complex information clearly and succinctly with impartiality and authority for a non-specialist audience.

This may include designing research projects and the analysis of evidence. - Work collaboratively to pilot, evaluate and implement innovative approaches to improve the use of research evidence across UK Parliament, based on good practice in knowledge exchange in academia and policy, and to share learnings from the project with wider stakeholders. - Support professional development activities to strengthen capacity across Parliament in research use and appraisal. - Produce guidance documents for parliamentary staff and staff employed directly by Members on a range of topics related to research use, including key external sources of information and frameworks to check and assess evidence quality. - Arrange events/roundtables/workshops to build connections between Members, Members’ staff and parliamentary staff with the external social science community and pilot and evaluate new formats.- Maintain and develop a network of contacts within Parliament and outside to ensure both Houses have a good understanding of policy developments in specific social science areas. - Recruit and supervise doctoral fellows on a 3-month placement with POST. - Undertake horizon scanning activities to identify and prioritise topics of interest to Parliament, and summarise these as part of the POST horizon scanning process. - Support monitoring, evaluation, and reporting activities.
