The Bronx Documentary Center (BDC) is a non-profit gallery and educational space; our mission is to use community-based documentary practice and education to explore vital issues, stimulate critical thought, and drive social change. We provide education programs for middle and high school students and a professional education program that offer opportunities for training in documentary photography, film, and multimedia storytelling.The Youth Photo League (YPL) is a free documentary photography, filmmaking, and college access program serving middle through high school students. The program teaches youth to use documentary practices to explore their communities, families, environments, and much more, while focusing on social justice issues in the South Bronx. Our curriculum gives students an immersive experience in the technical aspects of photography and photo editing while also promoting critical thinking, visual and news literacy, and writing.Responsibilities: Teaching and coordinating the classMeet with the Education Manager and Creative Director to determine class goals using the provided curriculumAttend BDC teaching staff meetings and training throughout the year. There will be a mandatory staff retreat before the program begins, date TBDParticipate in meetings teaching staff at least once a monthMaintain communication with the Education Manager to report on lesson plans, activities, changes in program design, changes in roster, and assessmentPrepare and teach lessons weeklyEstablish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the studentsCoordinate and facilitate student trips and guest speakersCommunicate with students, their schools, and families Ensure that students’ final projects are prepared for the final exhibitionManage the responsibilities of teaching assistants, including class prep, attendance, organization of student work, coordination of equipment and materials, and student evaluations
