Protein adsorption to a biomaterial is related to platelet adhesion and activation and has a large impact on the biocompatibility of a biomaterial. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEG) has been shown to reduce protein adsorption to surfaces when grafted to biomaterial surfaces. My research in this lab involves the generation of PEG surface density gradients to study and quantify the effects of PEG on protein adsorption and biomaterial hemocompatibility.Dr. Ambati's research focuses on understanding the fundamentals of ocular angiogenesis. Wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an ocular disease which is caused by uncontrolled neovascularization within the retina. My research involves the use of an anti-VEGF therapeutic agent delivered to the retina using a novel continuous-release delivery device. My focus is in studying and optimizing the biocompatibility of the device. I also manage and implement the device design and manufacture. My research made use of water contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) as techniques for characterizing the surfaces and protein adsorption to the surfaces.
