Sanstioven Nathanael Santo Joseph Stephen, who also goes by Nate, is initially from Brooklyn New York but currently lives in Brockton Massachusetts. He went to Southeastern Regional Technical Vocational High School where he studied advertising and design. His High School academics better prepared him for the art program at Bridgewater State University, having greater experience with Adobe programs. He developed some technical acuity in high school and college and currently has an internship with The Bridge, an award-winning journal that showcases students' literary and artistic work. Although traditional art is Nate’s foundation, he applies his grasp of foundational art to other creative forms of design, specifically in skills of concept, type, and layout.Jean-Paul Sartre states that man “encounters himself, surges up in the world — and defines himself afterward”. He tells himself this every day, motivating him to create pieces he feels proud of and works harder to live a more fulfilling life. Some of Nate’s influences include artists such as Kentaro Miura and Naohiro Shintani because of their thought-provoking ideas, concepts, and the art they bring up. He is currently working on multiple projects that excite him such as creating a layout design for Bridgewater State University’s Division of Student Life office booklet. This will be the foundation layout for the 2023 booklet and future booklets. He is also currently working on creating a series of book covers for a grim horror fantasy concept called Phantoms of Misfortune. This will use adobe programs such as Illustrator and InDesign to lay out the elements and use the ideas of typography. Some of his most prized achievements include the completion of the Gilmore school mural in Brockton Massachusetts and being featured in and interning for The Bridge Journal. He has been commissioned for things such as the “Liyah Cash Podcast”, Bridgewater State University’s Division of Student Life office, and other personal works. Nate started with analog hand skills but learned to embrace digital environments like photo manipulation, digital illustration, and layout. The design practice requires self-discipline, inner motivation, and he plans to keep thriving as an artist in a viable career and have longevity in his field to continue to do what he loves.
