I proudly began my decade-long career at Farm Journal as social media editor for platforms including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, Pinterest, Tout and RebelMouse. My responsibilities included regular posting, identifying and executing best practices and tracking analytics to build online audience. Additionally, I became a farm equipment fanboy as assistant machinery editor covering the agricultural equipment industry and facilitating copy flow for Implement & Tractor magazine and as irrigation editor for AgWeb.com and Farm Journal. I served as a member of the AgWeb.com team. In 2013, AgWeb.com's social media portfolio received a first-place award from the American Agricultural Editors' Association.

I provided daily news coverage for the St. Louis suburbs of Clayton and Richmond Heights as the editor of clayton-richmondheights.patch.com. I wrote in-depth and day-turn news articles, shot video and photos, and managed a team of contributing writers, photographers and videographers. I coordinated weekly and breaking coverage with other St. Louis-area Patch editors. I was responsible for daily outreach via Facebook and Twitter. I conducted management duties such as paying contributors, interviewing prospective contributors and responding to feedback and story suggestions from readers. I helped organize and host a Welcome to Patch Night to introduce the community to Patch and its mission. I assisted with outreach events at Schnucks and Clayton-Ladue high school baseball games. I developed a tutorial for guest editors to be used over vacations and other time off.

In my first job out of graduate school, I managed a small newsroom to produce daily website news and a print newspaper 5 days each week. Additionally, I helped report, edit and design news articles, features, investigations and multimedia. I coordinated reporting and photography with a stringer and periodic interns. I managed reader-shared content including letters, articles and photos. I used social media to disseminate live updates and breaking news. I wrote op-eds to engage the community in dialogue about the news. I explained newsroom operations and objectives in staff meetings and to service organizations. I worked with the publisher to develop editorial/corrections policies and daily budget meetings. I worked with the newsroom to develop the Boonville Daily News Stylebook. I initiated and led several multi-part investigative news series, one on a previously unreported child predator later convicted with support from insights that emerged from my reporting and another on freedom of the press for high school students.

This included providing editing tips and identifying items for follow-up in the production process. It fostered my love of teaching and coaching others, even in stressful circumstances with no clear right answers.

I worked during the Democratic National Convention in Denver to collect audio quotes from delegates for use by Cox radio affiliates. I helped keep credentials flowing smoothly to reporters working on deadline.

I assisted in editing of Missouri Press News, the trade publication of the Missouri Press Association; helped organize and prepare materials for newspaper contests such as the Missouri Press Foundation's Better Newspaper Contest, the Missouri Advertising Managers' Association Best Ad Contest and the Missouri College Media Association Contest; built databases of advertising contacts using Microsoft Excel; updated ad account books; and sent faxes and organized documents.
