Profile bio

About Nathaniel Klein

If you had asked me when I was eight years old what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have told you I wanted to play professional baseball for the New York Yankees. It only made sense that as I grew up, I fell in love with the engineering discipline, where I could combine the precise and detail-oriented work of a pitcher with the innovative and fast paced world of a batter. As a young engineer, I am still exploring the many avenues that mechanical engineering has to offer. I’ve done research at the Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics, where I designed a method and stepper motor device to calibrate sensors used in the lab’s electron ring. I also participated in the FIRST Robotics Competition for four years, where I got early exposure to the engineering process and tools such as Autodesk Inventor, 3D printing, and manufacturing (manual and CNC).In my two years at Carnegie Mellon University so far, I’ve spent most of my academic time learning the ropes of the foundations of mechanical engineering such as statics, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics. However, I find avenues outside the lecture hall to keep hands-on skills sharp. On the Carnegie Involvement Association buggy team, I get to hone my design skills each year with the creation of a new buggy as well as learn to be adaptable in a fast paced pit crew environment. Through my experiences in and out of the classroom, I have sharpened my skills in engineering tools such as Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor, ANSYS, MATLAB, and various manufacturing methods.
