About Nathaniel Klein
If you had asked me when I was eight years old what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have told you I wanted to play professional baseball for the New York Yankees. It only made sense that as I grew up, I fell in love with the engineering discipline, where I could combine the precise and detail-oriented work of a pitcher with the innovative and fast paced world of a batter. As a young engineer, I am still exploring the many avenues that mechanical engineering has to offer. I’ve done research at the Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics, where I designed a method and stepper motor device to calibrate sensors used in the lab’s electron ring. I also participated in the FIRST Robotics Competition for four years, where I got early exposure to the engineering process and tools such as Autodesk Inventor, 3D printing, and manufacturing (manual and CNC).In my two years at Carnegie Mellon University so far, I’ve spent most of my academic time learning the ropes of the foundations of mechanical engineering such as statics, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics. However, I find avenues outside the lecture hall to keep hands-on skills sharp. On the Carnegie Involvement Association buggy team, I get to hone my design skills each year with the creation of a new buggy as well as learn to be adaptable in a fast paced pit crew environment. Through my experiences in and out of the classroom, I have sharpened my skills in engineering tools such as Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor, ANSYS, MATLAB, and various manufacturing methods.

Research Assistant
- Redesigned and constructed magnetic wall climbing robot for chemical tank inspection- Conducted force analysis of interior corner transitions using MATLAB to determine constraints on frictioncoefficient, weight distribution, and magnet strength- Designed and implementing a linear controller using ROSpy to automate interior corner transitions
Mechanical Engineering Intern
Designed test procedures for quality control fixture of pneumatic cartridges for in-vitro diagnostics, designed and constructed parts for conducting specific QC tests on the fixture, and conducted market research and reverse engineered competitor in-vitro diagnostics cartridges.
Summer Associate
Steering Team Engineer
Designed a new steering assembly for a three-wheeled non-motorized racing buggy for an annual competition. Designed aluminum steering parts in Solidworks and performed load analysis using Solidworks and ANSYS. Conducted tolerance analysis for parts to be machined and created drawings using Solidworks. Manufactured and assembled parts using lathes, mills.
Research Assistant
Conducted an experiment investigating the mechanical properties of 3D printed lattice structures for use as padding in biomedical and commercial products under the guidance of graduate students. Using Solidworks and an in-house mesh generator, modeled lattice structures with different parameters. Simulated lattices under load in ANSYS and examined changes.
Team President
Led a 40+ person team, planned meeting schedules, oversaw a $30k/year budget, coordinated with professional engineering mentors.
Mechanical Team Lead
Maintained and enhanced team knowledge in electromechanical actuation including motors, gearboxes and mechanisms. Oversaw all mechanical systems on the robot and led mechanism teams through the engineering process using a modified Agile design process.
Research Assistant
Investigated the relationship between beam position and voltage readings of the beam position monitor in IREAP’s electron ring under the guidance of Dr. David Sutter. Designed and constructed a testing rig using Autodesk Inventor and 80-20 extrusion and automated beam position movement and data collection using MATLAB.
