I assess the ecotoxicity, fate and exposure of chemicals to determine whether they pose a hazard or risk to the environment in the context of REACH and CLP Regulations. I write sections of GB Mandatory Classification and Labelling reports and review EU harmonised classification proposals for industrial chemicals, pesticides and biocides. Under UK REACH, I conduct Dossier Evaluation processes and technical completeness checks on Product and Process Orientated Research and Development (PPORD) applications for industrial chemicals, working closely with HSE. I contribute to the review of international chemical hazard assessment methods and guidance documents with a special interest in developments on nanomaterials and advanced materials. I use hazard and environmental monitoring data to prioritise substances for review and manage research projects.

I evaluate the ecotoxicity, fate and exposure information of chemicals to assess the environmental hazards and risks in relation to REACH and CLP Regulations. I have often provided alternative interpretations of these data and made proposals to amend chemical classifications. In relation to REACH, I co-wrote a report on alternatives to the draft persistence, mobility and toxicity criteria and I produced sections of UK Substance Evaluation reports on the ecotoxicity, mammalian toxicity and overall hazard of various PFAS. I also contributed to research projects about endocrine disrupting chemicals in the UK, predicting the removal efficiencies of sewage treatment plants and environmental risk assessments of pharmaceuticals. I attended the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Europe conferences in Helsinki in 2019 and virtually in 2020, providing feedback on relevant research to CAU and wider internal and external colleagues.
