The Shelton lab designs microfluidic and organ on chip models of disease to uncover how the tissue micro environment and cellular interactions shape pathology and treatment response. Generally we generate vascularized micro tissues using cells and tissues from patients with a heavy focus on confocal microscopy for our endpoints.

• Further characterisation and validation of a novel in vitro model of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease utilising aerosol exposure technology. The project investigated the cellular responses of contrasting aerosols, in order to meet regulatory guidelines.• Lung carcinoma Cells were exposed to cigarette smoke at the air liquid interface using Transwell membranes. The cellular responses measured post exposure were cytotoxicity and pro inflammatory mediator secretion, statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism and Mintab.• I was responsible for creating the experimental design, presenting monthly updates and writing both technical interim reports and final project reports and revision of SOPs.
