I was introduced to programming whilst at university through a coursework component, CATAM, designed around solving mathematical problems using programming, during which I used Perl and MATLAB. In my spare time, I have developed my interest in programming by learning Python and applying this to solving mathematical problems on Project Euler and to real-world problems to optimally split train tickets to save money on a single or return journey. Through my work with PaperRound, I have learnt a huge amount about how a full production program works and the processes involved in developing within an agile environment. With the small team of developers, I have worked principally on back-end programming, but also on some of the web interface, using HTML and Javascript, as well as taking a major role in our transition to using Amazon Web Services, especially in turning our infrastructure into code using Terraform. This has included automated creation of Testing, Staging and Live environments with complete provisioning of front-end, back-end, VPN access, and DNS routing. I have also organised the automated export of our database into Redshift for archiving and Big Data analysis, working in both MySQL and AWS’s version of PostgresSQL.
