Designed, developed, and implemented a 2 kW off-grid solar system for exterior lighting in a remote rural farm in Alvarado, Tolima - Colombia, using my expertise in power electronics and renewable energy systems. Created a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for the solar system by developing a method to recover and recycle 258 lithium-ion batteries from discarded laptop batteries, and characterizing them to ensure their suitability for use in photovoltaic systems.Utilized Python programming to analyze over 15 years of solar irradiance data from various sources including NASA Power Access and PVGIS databases, to establish the optimal design parameters for the solar system. Developed a Python executable for computer-aided design of off-grid solar systems, including sizing and battery pack design based on system requirements, which led to significant improvements in efficiency and cost-effectiveness.Developed an executable in Python to pair and classify the recovered lithium-ion cells based on their nominal capacity values, and to connect them in series and parallel as per the system requirements.Sized the major electrical components of the battery system, including relays, fuses, current and temperature sensors, MSD, HV/LV wire harnesses, and connectors, ensuring optimal performance of the system.Installed PV modules on the rooftop, soldered the battery pack, and conducted validation tests to verify the proper operation of the battery pack and the entire system, in compliance with IEEE standards.Provided analysis reports on electrical energy efficiency measures, including annual energy savings, expected first cost, and economic metrics such as ROI, which proved valuable in decision-making processes.
