Graduate Mechanical Engineer
Chester, United Kingdom
I participated in an extensive Graduate Scheme that involved undertaking various placements throughout the TATA Steel Shotton site. These placements provided me with a well-rounded exposure to the diverse processes and departments within the organisation.During the initial three-week placement in the General Office, I was immersed in several departments, including Health & Safety, Finance, Logistics, HR, Commercial, and Production Planning & Control. This experience provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the site's operations, product portfolio, and allowed me to interact with a significant portion of the workforce.Subsequently, I spent seven weeks in the Central Engineering Workshops, where I gained in-depth insight into the capabilities of the Boiler Shop, Machine Shop, and the Fitting Shop. I also undertook several small projects during this tenure. My third placement, also spanning seven weeks, was within the Site Services Engineering Department. This exposure allowed me to develop a profound understanding of the site's resources, including the High-Pressure Hot Water Systems, Water, and Compressed Air.The subsequent 13-week placement positioned me on one of the two ColorCoat Lines. Here, I engaged in various projects aimed at enhancing line efficiency, reducing waste production, and improving maintenance practices.I later transitioned to the Engineering Projects Department, where I took a lead role in a project that explored the potential for a new small-scale line on site, dedicated to producing a novel product. My involvement also extended to multiple other projects, one of which revolved around the prospective establishment of a new multimillion-pound waste treatment plant, with the potential to generate substantial annual savings for the site. While my Graduate Scheme was abbreviated due to the opportunity to assume a substantive role within the company on a temporary basis, I was able to bridge the missed placements.
