About Nathan Chantry

An experienced architect with a background in financial services, I have 23 years of experience in the field of software development - and after all those years, I have never lost the simple sense of joy and creative freedom that developers feel when they are building things. Starting as a developer, I have grown into architectural and team leadership positions, working with both internal stakeholders and clients in equal measure. I have designed and built R&D systems and documented them for tax deduction purposes. I have defined technology roadmaps and led teams building POCs, presenting outcomes and recommendations to C level management teams. I have participated in pre-sales engagements, completing RFPs, selling the benefits of products and describing architectures to prospective and existing clients. I have contributed to due diligence technology assessments for corporate acquisition targets. I have led teams of developers and architects, representing them to senior management whilst also being able to 'talk tech' with them as equals.I am passionate about technology. I am passionate about talented people. I am passionate about using technology to unlock the potential of the people who underpin the businesses that I work with.

Chief Architect

Current

Windsor, Connecticut, Us

As the business transitions from the preparatory phase of its micro-services strategy to functional implementation, a need exists to have architectural oversight of the build pipeline in view of micro-service developments from other areas of the international business. The new role allows me to increase my engagement in global initiatives.

May 2022 - Present

Director Of Technical Architecture

Windsor, Connecticut, Us

In this role, I led the business’ Technical Architecture practice whose responsibilities revolve around the non-functional aspects of client solutions and application frameworks. The largest area of responsibility held by the team was the conception, design and implementation of the business’s micro-services technology strategy. The micro-services undertaking involved the definition of a target state architecture and a supporting development framework and process, POC, reference architecture and documentation to facilitate the build of functional components. The group then pivoted to support the build of the first wave of components atop the new framework. As leader of the team, I oversaw the technical activities, participated in the design and build, and represented the team to senior stake holders.Prior to the team being formed, I created a business case to attain sponsorship for the project, providing technical representation for the initiative to senior stakeholders in both the local and international businesses. The role also saw regular involvement in pre-sales activities such as RFI and RFP completion, and architecture presentations to current and prospective clients to communicate the business’ technology strategy and the transition state architecture of the Bluedoor product. As a company with a proactive growth strategy, I was also regularly involved in acquisition activities whereby I would be called upon to conduct technology and architecture assessments.

Nov 2018 - May 2022

Principal Technical Architect

Windsor, Connecticut, Us

Design and development of SS&C’s Opendoor Integration Platform, which provided front office and integration capabilities on to the core administration platform provided by Bluedoor. This was developed as an R&D project which required supporting documentation to justify its deduction through the ATO’s R&D claim process. I was also involved in the formulation of the Product Design Authority and Architecture Review Board governance bodies. This role also saw a continuation of the responsibilities held during my previous role as a solution architect.

Apr 2015 - Nov 2018

Solution Architect

Windsor, Connecticut, Us

In this role, I worked on Bluedoor - SS&C’s superannuation, pension and investment administration platform for the Australian and UK markets. My role here primarily involved supporting and developing the product’s application infrastructure and framework as well as new feature design and development. Participated in team leadership, mentoring, design, development, code reviews and documentation. Stand out achievements include the design and leadership of the implementation team for the product’s contact centre functionality, still used today by UK BPO operations to support over 2,000 administration staff managing over 100 billion GBP in FUM.

Jan 2009 - Apr 2015

Senior Analyst Programmer

Melbourne, Vic, Au

For this role, I was involved in the design and development of SuperPartners Member Super Site (MSS) member portal. SuperPartners provides a BPO administration service for Australian industry funds. Members could use the portal we developed to view their superannuation holdings, maintain basic contact details, and issue investment instructions. The role involved the development of a web portal that integrated with the organisation’s back-office administration platform (SuperB) through a WebLogic ESB. The product was developed using Microsoft’s ASP.NET Framework and was implemented using C#, NHibernate and Spring.NET. In addition to direct design/build/test activities, I was also involved in mentoring and interviewing.

Apr 2008 - Jan 2009

Senior Analyst Programmer

Windsor, Connecticut, Us

This role saw me join Bluedoor, a relatively new startup in the superannuation and pension administration industry. Bluedoor had secured a contract with AXA Australia to build out an administration platform and an adviser portal capable of supporting multiple new products they were bringing to the market – a mix of superannuation, pension, and general investment products.I worked primarily within the technical application framework of the system, dealing with cross cutting concerns such as logging, SQL Injection and XSS protections and code analysis. I also implemented the authentication and authorization schemes used by the system – which predated standard based flows and mechanisms such as OIDC and OAuth. The product was implemented using .NET Framework, ASP.NET WebForms, VB.NET and SQL Server. I worked across the full stack.

May 2007 - Apr 2008

Senior Analyst Programmer

Iwl

Au

In this role I worked as a web developer on IWL’s VisiWeb product, which was a parallel web-based sister product to the better known VisiPlan desktop solution. The Visi product line provided financial planning capabilities to use by advisers to manage their members. The product was primarily written in Visual Basic and classic ASP though over the later phases of my IWL career, portions of it were moved to the .NET Framework. The software leveraged a SQL Server database. As a developer on the product, I participated in the design and development of both the application frameworks and the functional build as required by the client base. My most long-standing achievement during my time with IWL was the development of the EPI 4.0 XSD schema, which was defined as a standard feed format for pushing client, account and investment data from financial planning products. As of today, the format is still used – at version 4.2. IWL was acquired by IRESS in 2007.

Jan 2003 - May 2007

Senior Analyst Programmer

Charlotte, North Carolina, Us

This role involved the design and development of a loan application website for the ANZ. My tasks included creating a data driven forms and validation engine using XML, XSL, XSD and SQL Server. The system utilized XSD snippets to perform data type and bounds checking (XSD) and XSL to implement more complex cross-field validations. I also developed an encoding tool capable of taking an XML structure (such as an XHTML-compliant web page with inline XSL/XSD validation rules) and encoding it into a SQL Server 2000 database via a self-referencing table hierarchy for later extraction by the validation engine. This was a short-lived project that ANZ culled through cost cutting.

Apr 2002 - Nov 2002

Senior Analyst Programmer

Arthur Andersen

In this role I worked within the IT department of Arthur Andersen. The role involved the support of various internal systems, primarily built on the Microsoft stack. I developed and supported survey software for internal staff polling using Classic ASP and SQL Server, as well as maintained and enhanced billing databases for local Australian clients using Microsoft Access. After a brief stint, I departed the firm looking for a more stable environment shortly after the fallout of the Enron scandal started to materialize.

Nov 2001 - Apr 2002

Analyst Programmer

Rotterdam, Zuid-Holland, Nl

In my first role out of university, I worked as an analyst programmer for Getronics who sold customizable teller software to the retail banking industry. The software was used by bank tellers within the branches to service customers and perform transactions. In the role, I worked on systems for multiple financial institutions including Bendigo Bank, Australian Central Credit Union and Suncorp Metway. The software utilized a proprietary development platform called MOSAIC, which possesses a VB like syntax, a graphical forms builder and its own proprietary relational database engine. The software leveraged a combination of screen scraping and MSMQ interfaces to communicate with COBOL based mainframes. As a developer on the projects, I was involved in building pieces of functionality for the system based on requirements documented by a BA.
