Nathan is the Director of Nursing for Metro North Mental Health (MNMH) where he is the professional lead for the mental health and alcohol and other drugs nursing professions. MNMH provides mental health and alcohol and other drug (MHAOD) services that support people who have severe and complex MHAOD needs or are in crisis, employing approximately 985 nursing staff. Metro North Health is the largest Hospital and Health Service in Australia servicing a catchment population of roughly 1.1 million Queenslanders, and provides state-wide, metropolitan and regional services. Nathan has demonstrated a passion for the mental health nursing profession, particularly interested in leadership development, expanding the nursing scope of practice, and developing innovative nursing-led care models. He advocates progressing a trauma-informed approach that aligns with reducing restrictive interventions and supports consumers from priority populations directing their own recovery and goal setting.Delivering specialist mental health services with the ability to lead a high-performing, multidisciplinary team, delivering quality trauma-informed evidence-based patient care while maintaining department budgets, setting strategic goals, leading clinical governance, workforce planning, integrating risk management frameworks, developing, and consolidating external partnerships; and optimising performance.Nathan has just completed a 12-month secondment as Nursing Director - Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs Advisor within Queensland's Office of the Chief Nurse Officer (July 2024), Nathan's role provided an opportunity to engage in the major reform agenda through $1.65 billion invested in mental health under the Better Care Together (2023-2027) plan. There is a real opportunity for the Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drugs Nursing professions to define unique roles and advance the agenda to work to their optimal scope of practice.In August 2023, Nathan was honoured to be elected as an ACMHN Board Director and is proud to serve the mental health nursing profession and the broad membership. The vision of the college is strong to be the voice of mental health nursing, and the commitment of the Chief Executive, college staff and fellow board directors is inspirational.
