About Nathan Herz

Growing up in rural Iowa in the early 2000's there wasn't much for a kid to do. I found pleasure in playing with Legos, dismantling my toys to see how things work, and helping my dad whose a carpenter on projects. When I got to high school I had the option to take engineering electives. This gave me drive and direction to pursue engineering.I was blessed to have the opportunity to internship at the same company all through college. It allowed me develop and understand what kind of engineer I want to be. Prior to graduation I had already been offered a job that best fits my skillset. Since then, I have specialized in field work and solving problems, researching and setting up my own solar power system, and designing the visor for the first LED lit racetrack in LoSail, Qatar. What makes me tick as an engineer: 1) You can never stop learning. I will never claim to be the smartest person in the room. This being said I will never shy away from a problem, I will reach out to the experts, do the research, and evaluate the problem at hand. 2) I always strive for self betterment. You can never stop improving in any aspect of life. There are things I know I am not great at i.e. Public Speaking. But to get over my fear, I went to auctioneering school where I had to learn the chant and get in front of a large crowd and interact with them. 3) Building relationships. Something I have always felt I'm good at is building relationships. I am very easy going, willing to recognize others achievements and give praise, and I enjoy the process of building a rapport. For instance, when I walk the manufacturing floor, often people will approach me with problems, questions, and its been very valuable in my career. What makes me tick:1) I enjoy fixing things. I regularly do my own auto maintenance and wood working projects. Learning the manufacturing process and how to run machinery is something I love inside the office and out.2) I get a thrill out of mastering challenges. Whether it's my hobbies like dog training, fishing, powerlifting, or challenges in the workplace. Overcoming, learning and mastering challenges is so satisfying.3) My goal in life is to make everyone I meet smile. I enjoy seeing people happy and I want every interaction I have to be positive. I use every opportunity to mature my skills. I have a calling for working with people and I strive to always be a student. Although, the one key takeaway about myself is that I am no expert in any form of engineering but rather someone whose willing to learn to solve the problem at hand.

Under time a constraint, I built a new specialty visor for the NBA, NFL, and NHL. The process involved modifying current parts and designing new parts. I was also tasked with creating detailed drawings, issuing part numbers, working with vendors to produce parts, and testing. I researched solutions for fixture fine tuning and aiming, established a concept, produced drawings, built the prototype, tested and revised, sent out for field testing. Rapid development for pole attachments, parts, and drawings, working with customer requirements.
  • Musco Lighting
    R&D Product Development Intern
    Musco Lighting Dec 2017 - Aug 2018

During this internship I learned the most about what an engineer does. For the first few months I worked with engineers learning the product. I was tasked with assembling the prototype fixtures and understanding the product. After that I was given some small reverse engineering videos to start. I redesigned a grommet and worked with vendors to produce a replacement part. For my big project I was given a task from the owner of the company that was not a field we were in. I had to design a portable soccer field that was lighted so that kids have a safe place to play. I had to work with the director of sales, creative arts, and the owner of the company to come up with a design. After a preliminary design was made, I was tasked with building the prototype. Over the course of three weeks, a prototype was built. I then got the prototype assembled, and ready for the presentation with Wells Fargo, Red bull, and U.S. Soccer Foundation. After some modifications were made, we set out to make the first production model and a contract was signed. Throughout my time working there I also learned a lot about manufacturing and I would work with engineers building prototypes using mills, lathes, drills, shears, and benders.
