Started and managed an engineering design team applying the principles of soft robotics to new biomedical applications. I lead a team of students from a wide variety of disciplines and stages of learning to compete in an international design and research competition.

I developed and tested a clinical decision support tool for primary care healthcare professionals in remote communities. I worked and learned alongside members of the LEAD Lab, an interdisciplinary research group at the intersection between software engineering and health care informatics. A joint venture of the University of Victoria’s Department of Computer Science (Engineering) and the University of British Columbia’s Department of Family Practice (Family Medicine), they bring together brights minds to solve complex problems in medicine's modern electronic age.

Under the supervision of Dr. Tamir Ailon in the Division of Neurosurgery, I performed clinical interviews and exams of patients referred for spinal surgery consideration. Additionally, I observed and assisted on a variety of surgical procedures learning basic operative skills and neurosurgical concepts. The majority of my time was devoted to performing research including a systematic review and meta-analysis of complications in spinal fusions.

The British Columbia Youth Parliament (BCYP) is a non-profit, non-partisan and non-denominational organization comprised of youth between the ages of 16 to 21. Every year, 95 dedicated individuals are elected to our parliament and congregate for a week-long session in the Legislative Buildings in Victoria BC, where we amend and deliberate legislation which later becomes the layout of projects run throughout the year. What sets us apart from others is that we are not a mock parliament. Rather, we build the organization upon the legislation we propose and after session, we work tirelessly to implement our obligation of service, while fulfilling our motto of “Youth Serving Youth”.

As a part of Dr. David Berman's lab, my work revolved around characterizing epigenetic bio-markers of prostate cancers in order to help differentiate between those cases that need aggressive treatment, and those for which treatment has limited benefit while lowering quality of life. I work both with large-scale data - including databases of patients, sequencing results, and genome alignments - and wet lab equipment.

Conducted research concerning inflammation in breast cancer and studied immunology, biosafety, basic research methods and more.

Lead the Youth Committee, giving oral presentations and leading workshops for thousands of youth in English and French at elementary, middle and high-schools across four school districts.
