About Nathan Liang

I am an academic vascular surgeon, clinical researcher, and entrepreneur with a focus on aortic pathology. I serve as the Director of Complex Endovascular Aortic Interventions in the Division of Vascular Surgery at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, and Associate Professor of Surgery and Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. My clinical focus is on the surgical treatment of aortic pathology. This includes complex endovascular aortic surgery with fenestrated/branched endografts as well as open abdominal and thoracoabdominal aortic surgery. My research focus includes prediction of aortic aneurysm behavior, outcomes after aortic surgery, and care of patients with acute aortic emergencies such as ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms and dissection.In addition to vascular surgery, I have a background and formal training in structural and computational biology, classical biostatistics, and machine learning methods.I am also a founder and the current CEO of Aneurisk Inc, a Pitt licensed AI startup focused on predicting the growth and behavior of abdominal aortic aneurysms based on clinical, morphological, and wall stress characteristics. Aneurisk technology has been funded by multiple entities for R&D including the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, UPMC Enterprises, the University of Pittsburgh, and the Jewish Healthcare Foundation. Our company has participated in multiple developmental accelerators including MassChallenge, LifeX, and the NSF regional and national I-corps programs. Our goal is to improve long-term care of patients with AAA by utilizing machine-learning based individualized prediction.
