Kodiak Cakes grew. A lot. And with that growth came the additional challenges and opportunities of a larger, more complex business. As CFO, some of these challenges included:-A more complex supply chain involving multiple temperature states, manufacturers, and fulfillment partners-A growing product portfolio with unique and varying input costs, margins, shelf lives, and distribution footprints-An ever-expanding team of individuals forming new functions and capabilities requiring training, management, and additional financial resources-New financing structures to fund growth, provide adequate liquidity, and responsibly leverage equity investment-An increased demand for business intelligence, analysis, and monitoring to ensure we execute on our strategic planAnd last but not least…-Keep having fun while living the Kodiak Code (the Code is a statement of values that underpins the culture)Ultimately my job was to make sure we continually got better as we continually got bigger, and thankfully I got to do that with the best team of people living the best culture making the best products in the best industry on the planet.

I had the pleasure of overseeing the finance function at Kodiak Cakes which consisted of the financial accounting team, payroll & benefits, and FP&A. My team handled the typical finance needs of a dynamic, fast-growing company, such as:-Daily accounting functions including invoice generation, collections, accounts payable, payroll, benefits, and bit of human resources-Monthly close including journal entry preparation, account reconciliation, and control documentation-Internal and external financial reporting, including financial statement preparation, reporting package generation, management/investor communication, sales reporting, cost/budget reporting-Regular and ad hoc analyses such as customer/channel/item profitability, item costing, sales mix, shipping efficiency, margin analysis & monitoring, and new item costing/forecasting-Long term planning including multi-year budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling-Tax compliance including federal, state, payroll, sales, use, and excise-Corporate secretary duties including managing compliance with- and updates to- the corporate documents (cap table, operating agreements, purchase agreements, restrictive covenants)-Training and developing the existing finance staff to grow in their skills, responsibilities, and careers-Process improvement initiatives to more efficiently accomplish all of the above, usually through the use of automation and technologyI also had the privilege of being a part of the senior leadership team which meant I helped form the strategic direction for the company together with the CEO, COO, and VP of Sales and VP of Operations. Together we collaborated and supported each other to create the best company we knew how - the kind we’d want to work for. For us that meant a company that, among many other things, enabled its people to get outdoors and play, which I got to do quite regularly, too.

-Began in the Tax department within the Spanish Fork office-Prepared nearly 100 individual and corporate federal and state tax returns-Consulted with clients on legal ways to reduce their tax liabilities-After 6 months, transferred to the Audit department in Sandy, Utah-Audited, compiled, and drafted financial statements primarily for insurance company clients in accordance with GAAP and/or Statutory accounting principles

-Started as a marketing intern for the Real Salt brand management team. Represented the brand at trade shows, visited chefs and culinary events to promote the product, followed up on sales leads, closed and serviced new accounts-Received an offer of continued employment at the end of the internship-Transferred out of the Real Salt team to the Real Foods Market start-up division-Held various positions within Real Foods over the next 2 years including Deli Manager, Produce Manager, and milk truck driver-Was the first individual to purchase a gallon of raw milk in the State of Utah under the new law spearheaded by Real Foods Market parent company Redmond Minerals (UT ST § 4-3-14)-Began a life-long passion for nutrition-based farming and ranching
