I’ve been a millwright since 2007 when I was awarded with the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship at Nanaimo Forest Products Pulp Mill, Harmac. Since that time I completed my apprenticeship in March or 2011. Harmac is an employee owned mill; as the shareholder employees, along with other partners, purchased the mill out of bankruptcy in 2008. My role in the mill has been more of a planner position in ordering and organizing work for mill tradesmen and contractors prior and during our annual outage. During the remaining months of the year I am on the tools in the steam plant and exercise my millwright trade. I have thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of my work as a tradesman as well as the times I am utilized in planning.I never realized that such work even existed as a young man growing up, and didn’t even know about industrial trades till I was into my 30’s. wish I knew soonerMy training at Harmac has been excellent and further training has been encouraged as well as supported by the company, financially as well as expressed. I hope to one day take on a leadership role that sees me taking on greater responsibility as well as further adapting my skills to become a more productive team member in whatever facet the future holds.
