As an undergraduate research assistant, I worked on several projects under the direction of my supervisor. I characterized self-assembled monolayers on gold surfaces, demonstrated electrochemical stability of surfaces across potential windows, measured tunable sensitivity of surface to analyte in response to applied potentials, and wrote MATLAB scripts for data analysis and graphic generation. Additionally, I synthesized methyl viologen (MV) compounds, purified them, and identified them using 1H-NMR techniques. I bound these materials to gold surfaces and determined the effect of pH on the current generated when these surfaces are exposed to carbohydrate solution. These projects have made me adept in experimental design, data analysis, characterization via cyclic voltammetry, and the purification of compounds using chromatography and other separatory techniques.
