About Nathan Risius

I am currently a mechanical design engineer at Ag Leader Technology.Previously I attended Iowa State University completing both a Bachelors’ degree in Mechanical Engineering (2012) and a Masters’ of Science in Agricultural and BioSystems Engineering, ABSE, (2014). During my last semester of my Bachelors' degree I began taking graduate level classes and enrolled in a Masters' program and began research for my graduate thesis centered on combine yield monitoring technology.Following college I began my career Ag Leader Technology continuing to focus on yield monitoring technology and other harvest related products. I have since added experience in auto-steering technology products as well as additional harvest technology.In January 2021, I began taking classes towards obtaining a Minor in Computer Science at Iowa State University which I completed in December of 2022.My goal as an engineer is to continue to identify and develop products that advance the agriculture industry while also continuing to grow my technical expertise and build on my current skill base.Outside of work enjoy spending time with my wife and kids, being outdoors, sports, and running.

    HARVEST PRODUCTS-------------------------Significant experience in harvest related products. Early in Ag Leader focused significantly on design improvements to mass flow sensing technology. Coordinated significant grain harvest testing project that involved various methods of data collection for the evaluation and development of the combine mass flow sensor.-Replicated the existing yield monitor calibration that ran in the Ag Leader display in Matlab by reading through the existing C++ code and creating equivalent Matlab algorithm. Used Matlab version to design and rapidly test potential calibration improvements using data collected during previously mentioned harvest testing. Documented preferred calibration improvements to be implemented into display code. Improved calibration implemented across Ag Leader displays in 2017.-Primary engineering contact with OEM customers for harvest products.STEERING PRODUCTS----------------On design team that produced the SteadySteer assisted steering product. Heavy focus on evaluating and testing the motor and other wear components. Built an automated test stand that atomically ran repeated test sequences for wear and durability evaluation. Allowed person performing the test to adjust torque required to turn the steering wheel and other test parameters easily through a touch screen display.-Worked with suppliers for design, tolerancing, and DFM on injection molded components, die-cast aluminum parts, and motor.
