Professional Goal:To see a cure for cancer in my professional lifetime.Professional Experience:The goal of my lab’s research is to investigate the contribution extracellular (exosomal) biomarkers make to the resistance of cancers to stress-induced cell death in the tumor microenvironment. Specifically, we plan to identify the functional role of inhibitors of apoptosis (IAPs) in promoting cancer cell survival in the presence of stress as well as investigate the functional significance of exosomal release of IAPs from stressed cancer cells. As PI or co-Investigator on several previous university-, foundational- and NIH-funded grants, I have sought to define a novel survivin research niche that doesn’t directly compete with established investigators. The paradigm shift to focus less on the autonomous functions of the cancer cell and more on the heterotypic interactions that go on in the tumor microenvironment is just such a niche. I have thus laid the groundwork for this research by developing effective measures of characterizing the release of survivin to the extracellular space, the uptake of survivin into cancer cells and surrounding non-cancer cells, and its proliferative and therapy resistance-inducing mechanisms. The current work builds logically on my prior work, and I have chosen to develop relationships in order to acquire the clinical samples that are needed to expand our in vitro findings in cell lines to translational questions with cancer patients.Specialties: Cancer Biology, Tumor microenvironmental studies, Solid tumor as well as Hematopoietic disease, Exosomes, The inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) protein Survivin, Biomarkers

Director, Research & Development; Forrester Endowed Chair; Dept. Of Radiation MedicineLoma Linda University Health Feb 2024 - PresentLoma Linda, Ca, UsThe James M. Slater, MD Proton Treatment and Research Center is the first hospital-based treatment center in the world and has treated over 17,500 patients, more than any other treatment center. With over 20 years experience in using proton therapy to treat disease, our expertise is unsurpassed.1990 James M. Slater, MD pioneered the field of proton therapy at Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) and it remained the only hospital-based treatment center of its kind in the United States until 2003.By 2005, 10,000 patients had received treatment at the LLUMC Proton Treatment and Research Center. Over the next decade, installation of a robotic assisted position unit allowed additional precision to the proton beam positioning. In 2010, LLUMC celebrated the 20th anniversary of the James M. Slater, MD Proton Treatment and Research Center. The staff at the James M. Slater, MD Proton Treatment and Research Center are some of the most qualified in field of Radiation Medicine, and they bring a wealth of experience in treating patients with a variety of cancers and conditions. Since 1990, Loma Linda University Medical Center’s Proton Treatment Center has been leading the way in effective, cutting-edge prostate cancer treatment with protons. Simply put: we have treated the most patients with proton therapy and have the most experienced staff in the world. For more information please call 1-800-PROTONS or click here for a free information packet and DVD. -

Founding Member, Center For Health Disparities & Mol MedicineLoma Linda University Jan 2006 - PresentLoma Linda, Ca, UsOur health disparities research interest is in understanding the connection between biological and social determinants of health. Our theoretical model suggests that ASCOS-Augmented State of Cellular Oxidative Stress- mediates low socioeconomic status effects that leads to health disparities in affected groups. Our team is also actively engaged in the implementation of evidence based research training programs and interventions to enhance student training and development to increase diversity in the biomedical workforce. -

Interim Chief Executive Officer, Canget Biotekpharma, LlcCanget Biotekpharma, Llc Jun 2012 - May 2015http://www.canget-biotek.com/index.htmlIntroductionCanget BioTekpharma is a biotech and biopharma company, which was spun off from Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI, Buffalo, New York) and focuses on development of novel, cancer-targeting anticancer agents. RPCI (www.roswellpark.org), founded in 1898, was the first cancer institution in the history of the United States and is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, which unites cancer prevention, treatment and patient care, cancer research and education into one.ChallengeLimited efficacy in terms of impact on overall cancer patient survival, toxicity and drug resistance is the major limitation and challenge of present cancer therapy. In this regard, drug and radiation resistance to treatment and tumor relapse are major obstacles in identifying a cure for cancer. Therefore, development of novel, cancer-targeting agents that address these challenges would be of the upmost importance in the fight against cancer.MissionTo dramatically improve patient survival time and/or survival rate through controlling cancer cell drug resistance and tumor relapse by providing highly effective, low toxic and cancer-targeting anticancer agents for patients.VisionEstablish a best practice where Canget BioTekpharma's success in innovation and development leads to both improvement of quality of life for patients and prosperity for owners, employees, collaborators, contributors, local communities and national economies.
