About Nathan Hirsch
A recent graduate of the University of Southern California Viterbi School of Engineering with an undergraduate degree in Astronautical Engineer and a Master's Degree in Aerospace Engineering with a focus on propulsion. Previously, I operated as one of the two lead engineers at USC's Liquid Propulsion Laboratory (LPL). Managing a team of 20+ members through multiple research and design projects simultaneously. Handling administrative roles, budgeting, timeline, as well as providing general supervision to design, manufacturing, and test operations. Providing insight and guidance to the various teams from past lab experience, as well as industry experience. Before that I acted as a lead feed system design and integration engineer developing a LOx/Kerosene feed system for a flight vehicle with an apogee of 40,000ft and supporting fluid ground support. The engine has a mass flow of 1.1454 kg/s with a mixture ratio of 2.09 with regenerative cooling.Initially, working on the GOx/Kerosene Hydra Feed System, designing dual static fire capabilities with a target chamber pressure of 725 psi each. Developing a Simulink software to model the entire system virtually to prepare for the integration of electronic pressure regulators to allow dual thruster capability.Previously working at USC's Space Research Engineering Center working on the development of an autonomous CubeSat docking system. Worked as the software sub-team lead employing C++, IR triangulation, Arduino, and LIDAR to make the procedure work.

Propulsion Test Engineer
Current
Safety Lead
Assisted the team in safely conducting various high pressure cryogenic testing procedures including cold flows, timing tests, and a single hot fire of the HODOR test stand and Mike's Fury rocket engine. Duties included day of assistance, proof reading and writing of procedures, running DAQ systems, ensuring hardware readiness, and pre-test briefings.
Lead Engineer
Leading a team of 30+ undergraduate and graduate students in the various projects the lab conducts, including research with the Aerospace Corporation, engine and feed system development, and the building of a new liquid/liquid flight vehicle. Also acting as the Lead Responsible and Design Engineer for our flight vehicle engine, a LOx/Kerosene engine with.
Feed System Test And Integration Responsible Engineer
Lead the testing and maintenance of our Hydra feed system, capable of producing 750 lbf on our Jessie and James engines. It is a GOx/Kerosene system capable of providing a mass flow of 1.15 kg/s with an MR of 1.875 at a chamber pressure of 1000 psi.Calculated main line and component pressure losses using the Darcy-Welbach formulas as well as the 2K.
Feed System Development Engineer
Worked as the media lead for our hot fire campaign throughout the spring semester as well as documentation. Made multiple iterations of a P&ID of our various configurations of the Hydra test stand, as well as worked on writing procedures for operating the stand. Also worked on the development of a test article for our coaxial swirl research project.
Freshman Academy Coach
Function as a coach to entering freshman engineers about the ethics and unspoken responsibilities of being an engineer in the modern-day through various class activities, presentations, and panel discussions, with added focus on how to be a successful collegiate engineer.
Reverse Engineering Engineering Education Tutor
Take courses on storytelling to learn how to properly communicate ideas and personal issues to peers and professors. Work with Viterbi students and staff leadership to create a tighter-knit community that accepts those from all backgrounds and perspectives.
Propulsion Test Operations Intern
Worked interchangeable between Stennis Space Center and Cape Canaveral to support test operations. Edited stage and ground GUI's to optimize for an easier work flow as well as making it easier to check for vehicle health. Additionally, wrote various automations for the stage and vehicle to allowing for simplified operations with more repeatability. I also.
Propulsion Test Intern
Designed a manufactured interface between the Griffin engine and the thrust measurement system which is integrated onto the feed system. Operates by piping the propellants and pressurants through a rigid system which the engine is bolted to. The internal piping was designed to be easily manufactured and result in minimal disturbance to the thrust.
Nasa L'Space Academy
A concept proposal academy designed by NASA to provide students with technical skills and the ability to design an entire space mission, as well as write a PDR explaining it. Designed a lunar orbiter and lander with penetrator probes that detect and characterize the ice in the permanently shadowed region of the Moon's South Pole. Worked as a science.
Cling - Research Assistant
Worked as the software subteam lead working to develop an autonomous, genderless docking system for CubeSats. Learned to use Arduino, centroid, and TriDAR technology to create a fully autonomous procedure for docking.
