About Nathan Scott
I am an experienced Enterprise & Solution Architect with a specialty in Data, and an internationally established expert in machine learning and data science. I have been responsible for product development and technology strategy for a portfolio of products in Xero, including the integration of an acquisition, and leading a major New Zealand payments organisation through a digital transformation. I have successfully bridged the gap between an established legacy technology stack and modern cloud patterns, and between waterfall and agile development processes in multiple roles. I am experienced with a number of technology stacks, and both PaaS (AWS, Azure) and on-premise data centres. I strive for pragmatism and simplicity in my decision making, and am relentlessly focused on continuous learning.
Listed skills include Programming, Computer Science, Software Development, Python, and 29 others.

Senior Architect/Solutions Architect - Banking Services
CurrentI am modernising Westpac's card payments and banking products, as the solution architect for Banking Services and the architecture lead for both Card Issuing and Deposits. I have delivered across our Digital, Cards, Personal Banking, Institutional & Business Banking, and Data domains, including products like Transaction Enrichment, Card Disputes (saving >50 hours a week for our staff), Instant Card Issuance (which reduced average time to first card use from 17 days to two), and Hotpoints Pay (used by over 20k Westpac customers to redeem over $800k in rewards in less than 6 months). I have also contributed to significant uplift in Architecture Practice through the development of multiple patterns (used for 90% of new Digital development) and the introduction of ADRs (now a standard across architecture and engineering Westpac-wide), and have built extremely strong relationships across engineering and product.
Architect
I owned the architecture for a number of products in Xero, most recently focused around their global Employee Domain (employment management, payroll, expenses, etc). I was the architect for a number of other products in different areas of Xero, including our Contacts (user CRM) capability, and the Projects and Xero-owned WorkflowMax work management tools. I led the closing stages of due diligence and the integration of LOCATE Inventory acquisition into Xero, now known as Xero Inventory Plus. I was a technology leader across multiple globally distributed teams, including in the US, AU, and NZ, working across time zones and different cultural expectations. I have been involved in a number of large scale programs, including Xero’s push towards domain driven design and monolith decomposition into microservices.
Data Architect (Enterprise)
I owned the enterprise design and strategic direction of the data systems powering electronic payment systems for over 80% of NZ's merchants. These systems process upwards of 1.3 billion EFTPOS, credit card, and online payment transactions, worth over NZ$75 billion each year. I was also responsible for solution architecture for Paymark’s digital products portfolios, including products like Insights and Token. I also owned the development and delivery of Paymark’s enterprise data strategy, where I drove a number of ongoing initiatives, including the migration of our data warehouse from Oracle to a cloud native system in AWS, development of a dedicated Business Intelligence team and data governance board, and the establishment and mentoring of a data science internship programme. My initiatives directly saved Paymark over $3.5m in ongoing data platform cost on a budget of $600k, while improving performance and availability. These initiatives were delivered in the context of Paymark being acquired by Ingenico and latterly by Worldline.
