If there is anything that running has taught me – it has taught me that nothing comes easy and requires a lot of hard work, patience, determination, and discipline.I spent a majority of my career life working on the customer service side, learning the ins and outs of the companies front end processes- from retail stores to healthcare companies; learning and absorbing everything I could. Customer service is something that came naturally to me, finding ways to relate to them really helped me grow professionally. You could say that this was my first “5K”.After a few years of hard work I was offered a promotion to a Senior Customer Quality Associate. In this new role I would have to tackle my current duties but I was also presented with additional work load – including helping to train new hire associates. This was an incredible opportunity that helped get more involved with what I love most – people. This was my very first “10k”.After a year in this role – I was encouraged to apply for a team lead position. In this role I would be responsible for managing 10-15 ‘entry level’ associates. This was my half marathon.As any runner would experience during their training, there are setbacks, there are situations that occur that setup challenges and sometimes make you fall back on your training. For me, that setback was organizational realignment that cancelled the race for me. I would have to start my training over, but eventually, with a little hard work and determination, I was given the opportunity to step into a supervisor role. In this role I was in charge of determining who would be joining the team, from recruiting and hiring to coaching and developing I was heavily involved in every aspect of every direct report’s professional development. That is where I found my niche. Relating to people from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds. It wasn’t always good, there were times when there just wasn’t a match – but those situations also helped me grow. Learning that personal growth and development is also about learning how to handle situations that might not have a positive result. This is my marathon.Not every race can be held during perfect weather, or be on a flat asphalt road. Some races are going to be easier; others are going to be more challenging. Its not always about how fast you run but more about crossing the finish line. Sometimes you get to be a spectator on the sidelines cheering on and sending encouragement, other times you are the coach providing feedback on how to improve, and other times you are the runner.
