He and several others contributed to an ongoing NSF-funded project to develop a small, radio-equipped electronic tag for logging large-scale movement of small migratory birds on a time scale of 6 months to a year. The tag uses a radio link to enable a ground station to retrieve the logged data, eliminating the need to recapture tagged individuals. His work was jointly funded by Cornell’s Engineering Learning Initiative (ELI) program. Nathan and his research partner re-implemented the radio data link protocol (originally developed for the TI MSP430 microcontroller) to run under TI-RTOS, TI’s real-time operating system, on the CC1310 RF microcontroller. This required fairly detailed understanding of both the legacy code and TI-RTOS, and Nathan met the stiff challenge of that learning curve. The team successfully produced working code. Nathan is a strong team player with a high level of initiative. He clearly pulled his weight in this summer’s project. He took direction readily, was willing to ask questions and to propose and discuss alternatives. Nathan’s work ethic is exemplary – he showed persistent commitment to the project goals along with integrity in reporting results without overselling himself or his work. Nathan is already showing outstanding abilities to make significant contributions to instrumentation, systems and automation. He did not have a clear opportunity to demonstrate leadership in this project, but judging by his personal maturity, integrity, and winsome personality, I would not hesitate to recommend him for a leadership role. I have been supervising both undergraduate and graduate students in projects of this kind at Cornell for approximately five years and Nathan’s work was truly working on par with the Ph.D. students.
