Profile bio

About Nathan Steffen

I am a PhD student studying Aerospace Engineering with a focus in Dynamics and Controls at the University of Cincinnati (UC). Recently, I graduated with my BS in Aerospace Engineering with a Minor in Mathematics and a Certificate in Computer Science. The focus of my research throughout the next few years will be the application of various AI methods in the controls of space robotics. As a returning Pathways Intern at NASA Glenn Research Center, I work with the Mission Architecture and Analysis branch where I support the OpenMDAO project and aid mission designers in low-thrust orbit trajectory planning. My past work experience includes research in Machine Learning at the Air Force Research Lab, along with several employed research opportunities at UC. Some notable UC research projects I worked on includes augmenting molecular dynamics simulators to have better performance and random state generation, along with simulating hyper-sonic Martian reentry flow coupled with an integrator to model reentry dynamics. For the latter project, I was awarded the Excellence in Research Communication Award for effectively communicating this project at the UC Undergraduate Research Symposium.Beyond my academics, I was the Drum Major of the UC Bearcat Marching Band where I led and conducted the 270-person band in rehearsals, games, and gigs. Upon graduation, I was awarded the Outstanding Senior Award by the Theta Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma for my contributions throughout my time in the band.
