The overarching aim of the ONS Centre for Equalities and Inclusion is to improve the evidence base for understanding equity and fairness in the UK today, enabling new insights into key policy questions. As head of Equalities Data Development my role is to work with others to make better use of existing data sources, and to develop new ones where necessary, to ensure that the right data are available to address the main social and policy questions relating to inequalities.

I worked in various roles within the Household Income and Expenditure (HIE) branch for nine years; in June 2016 I was promoted to head of the outputs team.The HIE branch deliver wide ranging and high-profile analysis on household incomes, poverty, material deprivation and related topics to help inform public debate and policy in this area. In this role I lead a small team responsible for producing some of the core outputs of the branch and was responsible for:• Ensuring the successful delivery of the branch’s flagship publications, ‘The Effects of Taxes & Benefits on Household Income’ (ETB) and ‘Household Disposable & Income Inequality’ (HDII).• Responding to user needs regarding the timeliness of ETB and HDII, identifying efficiencies which delivered improved timeliness whilst ensuring data quality was not compromised. • Leading work to regularly update and improve the methodology and system for producing these data, ensuring that we respond to changes in taxes and benefits, as well as improve measurement of areas such as benefits in kind. • Working with others to integrate the production of early ‘nowcast’ estimates of income distribution statistics into existing processes and timetable, resulting in the delivery of a regular bulletin.

As an Executive Officer (EO), in the annual branch of Editing and Validation (E&V), of the Business Data Division (BDD) I was a line manager of a team of seven with responsibility for data validation of six ONS inquiries.Responsibilities in this role included: • Managing the daily workflow of a team, dealing with prioritising, deadlines and directing resource. • Quality checking data and handling queries deemed as more complex. • Coaching other teams across the division with queries deemed as more complex. • Act as project manager for the division on the flex project, which was the project for updating IT systems, producing and managing sign-off of test scripts. In this role I was also a facilitator for a series of workshops titled; ‘Focus on Improvement’ and ‘Rapid Improvement’, helping encourage others to see change as a positive.

I commenced employment with the Office for National Statics as an Administrative Officer (AO) within Editing and Validation (E&V), part of the Business Data Division (BDD). I was appointed to the Producer Price Index team (PPI) and Service Producer Price Index team (SPPI). My position had the following responsibilities: • Managing an allocation of UK Businesses• Identifying and investigating data anomalies• Keeping comprehensive records of all actions taken• Contributing to the efficient running of the branch; regularly reviewing processes and, where appropriate, providing recommendations for improvements.
