I joined the California Nevada Cement Association as a Pavements Engineer serving the Southern California and Southern Nevada areas in the Fall of 2015. My function is to provide resources, recommendations, education, technical expertise, project costing assistance, and several other services to public agencies, design engineers, project owners, developers, and contractors to advance the use of concrete for highways, streets, recreational facilities, and parking areas. As a not-for-profit association, we are able to offer our services at no cost to all groups interested in exploring the benefits that a well designed and built concrete pavement can bring.

My work as the Lead Structural Materials Representative for Southern California included managing the inspection staff and engineers in support of the Caltrans Office of Structural Materials, under the Materials Engineering and Testing Services group.

As the NDT Division Leader, I managed a staff of engineers and inspectors performing structural materials inspections and materials engineering on a wide array of construction projects of all sizes and locations.CALTROP materials inspectors and engineers have many years of training and experience in the execution of major bridge and infrastructure projects around the world. Our team carries a wide range of Industry-standard certifications, including those from the American Welding Society (Certified Welding Inspectors, CWI), the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (Nondestructive Testing Technicians; NDT Levels II and III), Precast Pre-stressed Concrete Institute (Quality Personnel Certification, PCI Levels I, II, and III) and American Concrete Institute (ACI Field Testing Technician}, Certified Coating Inspectors, (NACE levels II and III). CALTROP materials staff have an intimate knowledge of Caltrans and LACMTA specifications and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards.Our Source Inspections services group provides inspections at the point of fabrication for highway construction items including Steel & Concrete Girders & Piles, MSE Panels, Bridge Deck & Pavement Panels, Box Culverts, Overhead Sign Structures, Signal and Lighting Poles, and Pedestrian Overcrossings.

My work as a Structural Materials Representative consisted of managing the quality assurance inspection process of structural items including steel and concrete girders and piles, and welded sign structures used on the state highway system. I work directly with CALTRANS inspectors, resident engineers, structure representatives, and contractors to assure that materials are properly designed, fabricated, inspected, and delivered. Other responsibilities included conducting engineering investigations, reviewing shop drawings and quality control/quality assurance plans for conformance with specifications and special provisions, preparing reports, performing field observations of fabrication and construction, and anticipating and resolving issues associated with quality assurance inspections.

My position in the Land Development Division included managing subcontractors and design staff to produce complete and correct plan sets and ensure the timely submittal, and approval of commercial land development improvement plans, technical studies, and final maps. I also worked closely with government, utility, and regulatory authorities on behalf of our clients to secure the prompt approval of their documents. Additional responsibilities included quality and constructability reviews of plans during the development process.

My responsibilities as a Project Manager in the Forward Planning Department included managing the planning, design, and approval process of all phases of residential land development including the coordination, preparation, and review of technical studies, improvement plans, and final maps to ensure the timely delivery of complete and correct approved plan sets to the Land Development Department for use in the construction of new residential communities. Additional responsibilities included updating Microsoft Project and Primavera schedules during the planning process.Working as a Superintendent in the Land Development Department included the scheduling and coordination of all phases of residential site development with subcontractors, inspectors, and engineering support staff to ensure the timely and cost effective delivery of finished lots ready for new home construction. Additional responsibilities included the preparation of take-offs and estimates for the estimation of land development costs in support of new community development.

My role in the Traffic section included writing Feasibility Studies, Traffic Impact Analyses, and Mitigation Studies. I also designed on-site and off-site site roadway and traffic plans, visited project sites to solve site-specific problems, and coordinated with clients and government entities to ensure compliance with local requirements and an expedient submittal and approval process. Additional responsibilities included the preparation of some drainage studies, HEC-RAS models, and FEMA LOMR preparation.

My position as a construction intern in the Tucson District; Construction ORG. 8132, included the responsibilities of inspecting clearing, grading, concrete pours, structure construction, paving, striping, and signing for highway and drainage projects. In addition, I reviewed plans for upcoming projects; including partial submittals, take-offs, and estimates prior to the commencement of construction.
