About Nathan Smith

I am a friendly, approachable person, hard-working and supportive team player and diligent and professional in my work. I have a wide set of skills, from working on front end Angular based apps to NodeJS back-end services to Enterprise Java applications. I have worked with CI/CD tools to own deployment of our apps through to production to support our end-users. I have contributed extensively to testing approaches utilising all levels of the testing pyramid (End-to-end/Integration/TDD) on multiple projects and have become some what of a champion so that quality is built into our applications from the start. I cut my teeth on Scrum at NZQA but have progressed to working using Kanban and hybrid approaches at Stuff. I enjoy working towards an MVP and owning the project from conception to deployment so that we can deliver to production and get feedback early from Users.I have nearly 20+ years experience as a developer specialising in Java and in recent years experience in JavaScript and TypeScript. Over the years I have had the opportunity to work with a wide range of people from Testers to Tech Leads, Agile Coaches, Product Managers, Product Owners and UX Architects and Designers.

I wanted to create a set of jobs that would be able to set up a service in OpenShift. I wanted the jobs to be generic enough that any team could use them, not just teams in a specific domain. The build and deployment pipelines would be generated from Jenkins DSL templates and the OpenShift object manifests generated using Helm making sure they were Kubernetes compliant.Team Clannoli - Services to assist front line staff∙ Supporting Springboot API's and React frontend.∙ Moved teams application code from monolithic Springboot module project to own repo∙ Made it possible for testers to deploy the feature being tested to their own Openshift environment.∙ Moved Openshift pipeline to Jenkins pipeline∙ Supported testers in creating Selenium tests and improved creation of tests using Selenide∙ Provided code reviews and mentorship to help improve their coding skillsTeam Blacksheep - BNZ Authentication Hub∙ Supported Springboot API's and React and Angular frontends∙ Supported making changes to services and infrastructure using Puppet and carrying out releases∙ Moved all Jenkins jobs from old dev instance with manually created jobs to new managed instance with jobs defined as code so creation of jobs are automated.∙ Supported automation tester in creating the infrastructure to test features/components/services using BDD scenarios. The automated testing uses Selenium grid for internal services/UI's and Browserstack for public facing services/UI's.∙ Provided code reviews and mentorship to help improve automation testers coding ability and knowledge and in designing the automation testing framework. For over a year I worked with a team looking after video content for the site by integrating the Brightcove player. We also improved the journalists workflow of being able to provide video content for articles. I also worked with a team to improve content curation for the "Homed" section of Stuff and will further be looking at using machine learning in providing a smart/automated way of suggesting related articles for sections of the Stuff site.∙ Worked with Video Content Handlers to form a common language to provide scenarios for BDD approach∙ These scenarios were used to drive the development of a video ingestion service to provide video content from Brightcove into our CMS. This significantly reduced the time it took for journalists to add a video to use in an article.∙ Provided guidance and led by example when carrying out our testing approach using Cucumber-JS. On the video ingest project we used TDD to drive the design, which also generated a very high test coverage.∙ We carried out an experiment where for 6 months we took a mobbing approach to our work. The whole team worked together as much as possible on all project work. This was carried on into the next project, which led to a very successful video publication service written in TypeScript.∙ I have been involved in CI/CD using Jenkins to carry out development builds and run our Integration Tests for the legacy CMS system. I have also used Codeship for our smaller services, which has enabled us to own the deployment pipeline and release multiple times in a day to production.∙ I have worked with Serverless Framework to deploy apps to AWS. Used NodeJS, Angular, TypeScript and Docker to provide backend services and web based apps. Worked with Java and Spring as part of the legacy CMS. Show less
