Controls & Systems Engineering ManagerTethers Unlimited, Inc. Apr 2019 - Oct 2022Bothell, Wa, UsI was the manager of the systems engineering department, starting with its formation under the mission statement to “Serve as the conduit of knowledge between each team/discipline for our coretechnologies, and ensure our products are designed, built, and operated to meet requirements.” My team was responsible for cradle-to-grave development including customer interfacing, simulation/modelling to derive top-level requirements, architecture design, technical product development, prototype integration & test, verification & validation and mission operations.-I grew the team from 4 to 12 highly skilled and motivated individuals; I authored REQs, interviewed, hired, and on-boarded 14 systems engineers.-I provided mentorship, coaching, career development, and tactical execution advice for members with specializations ranging from GNC & robotic controls, mathematics, mechanical, electrical, and aerospace engineering.-I developed Tethers’ requirements documentation and verification processes.-I served as chair for all requirements reviews and as a member of design review boards for TUI’s technology development projects, including robotics payloads, water propulsion thrusters, gimbal mechanisms, in-space manufacturing systems, and software defined radios. -
Robotics Program ManagerTethers Unlimited, Inc. Apr 2018 - Oct 2022Bothell, Wa, UsI was the lead engineer and manager of TUI’s KRAKEN Robotic Manipulator team. As the Robotics Program Manager, I also served as Principle Investigator of four active space robotics technology SBIR contracts for customers in NASA JSC's Robonaut Team, NASA ARC's Astrobee Team and the Air Force for on-orbit servicing.I was Project Manager for projects totally over $4M, and have led in technical writing for five successful SBIR proposals. -
Aerospace Systems EngineerTethers Unlimited, Inc. Oct 2016 - Apr 2018Bothell, Wa, UsI served as lead engineer on the MANTIS project to put the KRAKEN arm within an EXPRESS Rack locker to remotely service experiments. I led a complete re-design of the KRAKEN robotic arm, implementing human safety features to enable operation near crew within the ISS. As Systems Engineer I participated from preliminary design to integration, and initial testing of a terrestrial EDM.I worked closely with other teams to establish a common Simulink toolchain in the company. I also supported Controls & Systems Engineering efforts of various projects, including the Trusselator, OrbWeaver, and Refabricator. -
Engineering ManagerIspace, Inc. Oct 2015 - Jun 2016Tokyo, Chuo-Ku, JpI was responsible for managing the development team of GLXP Team Hakuto's lunar micro rover. The development team is based out of the Space Robotics Laboratory, under Professor Kazuya Yoshida (Tohoku Univ. Professor and CTO of ispace), at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. As Engineering Manager I was responsible for:• Coordinating with the Hakuto PR Team and company leadership in Tokyo• Interfacing with our lunar landing service provider for integration• Interfacing with manufacturers and suppliers• Maintaining the development schedule and budget• Assigning tasks to ispace engineers (4 people), Team Hakuto student members (6) and interns• Planning and Logistics for Field Testing and System Tests (Radio, Radiation, thermal vacuum testing, etc)• Mission Operation and Software Architecture (Rover and Ground station)• Power Distribution Unit (PDU) development and troubleshooting• Handling of rover battery• Training students in operation of rover avionics• Organizing and conducting meetings• Purchasing, organizing, and maintaining tools and equipment (clean booth, soldering rework stations, simulation workstation, parts inventory, etc) -
Phd Student / Lab ManagerSpace Robotics Lab Of Tohoku University Apr 2011 - Sep 2015Sendai, Miyagi, JpI conducted research on mobility and navigation technologies for lunar micro-rovers (<10kg). This research was performed on a rover testbed codenamed Moonraker, in cooperation with Japanese GLXP competitor, Team Hakuto.Moonraker has a four-wheel skid steer configuration, with a large wheel-body size ratio. The primary mobility hazard both in the Lunar Mare region and on Mars is the soft, fine nm-scale regolith. Every mission to the Moon and Mars has been immobilized at least temporarily by soft soil hazards. Moonraker is a unique, minimalist micro rover with exceptionally robust mobility performance over loose soil and regolith. Moonraker is a sub 10kg-class rover with no radioisotope heater unit and cannot survive the temperatures of the lunar night. The Hakuto mission is therefore designed around a 14-day mission constraint, making the time-efficiency of operations a priority. The following research was conducted for my PhD Thesis "Teleoperation of Lunar Micro Rover with Monocular Omni-Camera":• Evaluation of 4-wheel skid steer mobility system through field testing and development of a slip estimation model.• Analysis of grouser length impact on skid steering performance in soft soil. Development of energy efficient driving strategies to save power.• Implementation of a feature tracking and egomotion localization method developed for real time on-board localization.• Design and evaluation of teleoperation system to mitigate time lag between the Earth and Moon with a semi-autonomous control scheme. The teleoperation system was field tested at a lunar analog environment in real-mission bandwidth and time-lag conditions.(This field test was the basis for Team Hakuto's GLXP Terrestrial Milestone Mobility Prize awarded in 2015)Altogether this research provides a complete systems-level implementation of a lunar micro-rover mission. -
Graduate ResearcherSpace Robotics Lab Of Tohoku University Apr 2010 - Mar 2011Sendai, Miyagi, JpI was acting Systems Engineer for the GLXP team White Label Space's lunar micro rover, code-named Moonraker. I refined designs from my internship (see ISU, 2009 below), and led a small team of interns in taking the concept through several design iterations, COTS component selection, assembly, software implementation, and field testing. In order to make the transition from Computer Science/Software Engineering to Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, I studied and took classes on advanced math, control engineering and dynamics. In 2011, I was admitted into the graduate course of Tohoku University's Graduate School of Engineering. -
Junior Game DesignerAloha Island, Inc. May 2007 - May 2008I was responsible for animation/cutscene programming, game map layout and dialogue scripting for the educational Nintendo DS game, “Cosmos Chaos”.I worked part time to support my final year at University of Hawai'i.
