About Nathan Lowry
I have a number of years of experience planning, designing, building, and delivering. I enjoy working in all layers, collaboratively as part of cross-functional efforts! As needed, I have been happy to serve as team & technical lead to help build and guide teams towards success. I look forward to architectural discussions, planning, and execution. I work hard to ensure quality in the code my peers and I write. I aspire to write code and build solutions that are clean, well documented, and easily understood. One of my favorite things is seeing others benefit and be able to build upon my work!Over the course of my career, I've enjoyed working with a wide range of technologies, frameworks, libraries, and ecosystems. I started in a very Microsoft-centric, on-prem stack working on a custom electronic health record platform with C#, ASP.NET, JQuery, and Angular. I then transitioned to an opportunity where I was focused on transitioning away from C# APIs to Node microservices in a hybrid on-prem & AWS ecosystem. At my current company, we are fully in AWS. I've worked on a few teams starting as an engineer on a feature team building in PHP & some Node. I then was able to help build and work on a team focused on inbound and outbound data with Python using pandas, Luigi, AWS Lambda & Kinesis, Jupyter, and more. Most recently I've been working on our platform team building on some of the foundational services in Flask and starting to focus on developer experience.
Listed skills include C#, Asp.Net, Javascript, .Net, and 25 others.

Staff Software Development Engineer
Senior Software Development Engineer
Senior Engineer
Platform some of my contributions (March 2021 - October 2021) included:- Working on a large project to overhaul our patterns for authorization and access controls using Open Policy Agent. We have built a new Flask API, AWS lambdas for async processes, integrated into our CICD process for products to define their features and permissions during deployment. - Improved our developer/engineer experience. I helped with features easing debugging in an AWS Cloud9 environment, built CLI tools and scripts to help ease pain points, wrote documentation, and advocated and modeled simplification of our Python dependency management. I have consistently contributed our on internal processes for improving our engineering org in process and technical areas.Favorite data contributions (Dec 2018 - March 2021) included: - Built a REST-ful service in AWS Lambda to support easy horizontal scaling to process transactions in our platform for clients.- Moved an integration for a specific provider that provided real-time decision support data lookup to a more flexible approach enabling different source systems. - Rewrote our file-event broker to be a Python AWS lambda using JSON for event registration. Added flexibility to invoke lambdas in addition to the Luigi pipelines.- Replaced an integration aggregating daily transactional data to a Python Luigi pipeline delivering outputs to their partner SFTP in the client's required format.- Architected, built, and delivered a provider integration with my team. We used AWS Lambda + API Gateway to provide HTTP endpoints for the partner to interact with our platform. We set up AWS Kinesis for application events to trigger interactions with the partner’s API. We leveraged the Luigi data pipeline framework for processing.- Used the stevedore python package for modules to be loaded dynamically by convention enabling the development of tooling to improve our local build process for debugging and abstraction of code into python packages.
Engineer
In this role my favorite contributions were: - Worked with a principal engineer to establish a framework for Luigi data pipelines and event-driven serverless architecture to deliver data connectivity to clients, build integrations with partner service providers, and facilitate the implementation & onboarding process. - Took lead on a project to deliver the company’s first data integration with a client built-in TypeScript using AWS Lambda. We were able to catch up to the client’s timeline and partner with the client on delivery. This first data integration served as a springboard for the features we would build the Python framework around.
Senior Software Developer
I worked with a cross-functional group to build a patient engagement portal sitting on top of EHR platforms. Historically this application was a couple .NET monolith APIs sitting behind an Angular front-end + some .NET windows services for moving data. We worked on breaking apart the monoliths into node micro-services. Some of my favorite contributions include: - Served as the lead developer to build a node microservice (using Hapi) to integrate with form.io allowing patients to complete forms prior to clinical interactions. Form responses were taken from the forms, transformed, and sent into the appropriate electronic health records platform.- Brought onto a team to work with them on a project to create PDF forms (using handlebars and PhantomJs) from patient demographic and historical data for use within one of our supported electronic health records platforms.- Put in place patterns to ease integration for clients who use SAML for Single Sign-On. Also, built a deployable test application allowing us to test SAML SSO in environments during deployment.- As a backend developer, I assisted in the architecture planning and execution of how to move our .NET monolithic APIs and data-synchronization windows services to node microservices behind an API Gateway. Also began work to implement RabbitMq as our event bus in an architecture heading towards event sourcing and CQRS.
Developer Iii
I mainly worked on advancing the company's electronic health records application through new functionality additions and refactoring of what we already have to enable clinical staff that provided healthcare to patients in correctional & mental health settings. In this role I was able to:- Lead a team of 8-10 engineers on new product experience for mental health institutions. The primary technologies for the new development were ASP.NET MVC, Web API, Entity Framework, and Angular. - Completed evaluation and recommendation of AngularJs framework. This included comparison against alternatives, development of a proof-of-concept, introduction to the team, planning implementation into existing application architecture, and initial features delivery. Prior, I’d helped the team adopt Jquery for pub/sub patterns & complex grid structures, etc...
Developer Ii
In this role, a couple of my favorite accomplishments were - Implementation a CPOE (computerized physician order entry) system acquired from another company. The solution includes a WPF client application for tracking order admin, order facilitation within the web application, a WCF service for abstraction of common functionality. I worked extensively on the UX to enter orders, workflow for providers and staff to sign-off using our signature workflow, and integration with our off formulary approval process.- Leading a project to build a solution for a hierarchical signature workflow for electronic documents submitted using the electronic health records application. This involved database design and development, user-experience design & implementation, and saving signatures within the electronic documents where the signature marked a point-in-time snapshot of the document's state when it was signed.
Junior Developer Intern
I worked in the Application Development department as an intern gaining experience in a .NET environment.
