Assigned to make trades within the materials and utilities sectors, and traded with real money in a fund worth ~$1.2mm. Developed presentations and pitches for equities that were traded.

During my internship at Copperwood Energy I learned the logistics of how power is generated and about different energy sources. I began by balancing the coal market in the United States for 2021. First, I forecasted coal production for the last three quarters of 2021 in the United States. I did so by using two regression analysis models, one examining the relationship between total US production and rail cart data, and another comparing total US production to annual guidance from public companies--these regressions had 0.9756 and 0.955 r-squared values respectively. I then estimated demand (with another regression model) and exports to determine the expected coal stockpiles at the end of the year. Additionally, I learned about financial derivatives, specifically the basics of futures markets. I traded natural gas futures contracts by looking at supply, demand, and weather fundamentals. Every week, I developed an opinion on the weekly EIA (Energy Information Administration) stockpiles number each Thursday and articulated this to others. My total profits were $900,063 after two weeks of trading. I calculated these profits using mark-to-market accounting.
