About Nathan Trost
A creative-minded person, I originally entered the world of web development 10 years ago with the intention of being a designer. I'd spent a good chunk of my young adult years working long hours in dead-end jobs, with a growing feeling that I was stuck and not living up to my potential. Shortly after the 2008 recession, I lost the two jobs keeping me afloat, but with this misfortune I qualified for a grant to take a web marketing, development, and design course at JCCC. It provided a general foundation, with resources and surface level introductions to many facets of those three very broad subjects. At the end of that course I’d proven to myself that I was a Web Developer. It was now up to me to prove it to others and gain employment doing it. I began by freelancing—applying whatever knowledge I had already accrued, as well as adding the new and very random items I would come across to my toolbox. I took any job I could get my hands on, and I taught myself how to do it to the best of my ability. I designed and developed from-scratch websites, I added functionality to websites built on top of popular CMSs, I managed inventory for online stores. One time I was even called upon to fix a client’s printer. I kept this up for a few years before I finally decided to join a team full time.In those years, I came to the realization that while design is fun, my passion truly lies in making things work the way I want them to. Learning the tech stack to the point of relying on it to do the heavy lifting, and then coming up with creative solutions for how you can make it bend to your will when needed. It’s truly exciting to see your ideas come into shape as a functional means of solving someone’s problem, and I feel fortunate to work within an industry that constantly challenges me to grow and evolve. I’m apprehensive about calling myself an “expert” in anything, as each language has a wealth of rules that I may have either not yet come across or have misplaced in the recesses of my brain. Currently, I'm most skilled in Javascript and React, and I’m confident that I can wear any hat needed when called upon. Priorities? Clean readable code. Standard coding patterns and practices.DRY principles.Fearlessness in tackling new challenges.A drive to make the best product I can with the tools I have at hand. Values?Innovation and exploration of new tech.“Strong opinions, weakly held” from those around me. Open communication and the sharing of ideas without ego. What I want to achieve in this industry?Make cool things!
